Nurse Practitioner/Staff Educator

Job Summary:

The Primary Care Health Service at Barnard College seeks a dedicated and experienced full-time Nurse Practitioner and Staff Educator. The successful candidate will provide high-quality medical care to students while playing a key role in staff education, professional development, and clinical training initiatives. This role integrates clinical assessment and treatment, management of acute and chronic conditions, staff mentorship, participation in on-call coverage, community, and campus partner outreach, and development of educational programs for both patients and healthcare providers. The position is primarily clinical (80%), with 20% allocated administrative time. It is a full-time, in-person position, requiring participation in the after-hours on-call rotation schedule.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Clinical Care

  • Deliver comprehensive primary care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referrals, with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention.

  • Obtain comprehensive health histories, considering psychosocial, cultural, and environmental aspects.

  • Perform comprehensive physical and gynecological examinations.

  • Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory and imaging tests.

  • Formulate and implement treatment plans based on evidence-based guidelines.

  • Identify and manage acute and chronic health problems using various treatment modalities, including lifestyle counseling.

  • Make appropriate referrals for specialty care, hospitalization, or emergency care.

  • Evaluate patient responses to care plans, make necessary modifications, and ensure appropriate follow-up.

  • Serve as a consultative resource to the clinical team and act as clinical administrator on duty within the clinic.

  • Lead the clinical team in emergency procedures.

  • Participate in the after-hours on-call system to provide continuous care for students.

  • Document all clinical interactions in the electronic health records system.

Staff Education and Professional Development

  • Develop and implement training programs for clinical staff, including best practices, new medical protocols, and emerging health trends.

  • Assist in coordinating and leading clinical meetings in collaboration with the Assistant VP of Health and Wellness.

  • Provide mentorship and educational support to nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare staff.

  • Conduct case reviews and debriefs to enhance clinical knowledge and quality of care.

  • Stay up-to-date on medical advancements and ensure staff are trained accordingly.

Community and Campus Partner Outreach

  • Serve as the liaison from PCHS to the LeFrak Foundation Center for Health and Well-being.

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with campus and community organizations to enhance student health services.

  • Develop and deliver workshops and presentations on various health topics tailored to the student population's needs.

  • Participate in campus health and wellness programs, providing expert guidance and support.

Patient Communication

  • Communicate with patients regarding test results, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions via phone or secure messaging.

  • Ensure patients receive clear, accurate information to make informed healthcare decisions.

  • Uphold patient rights, confidentiality, and dignity in all interactions.

  • Foster positive patient relations and a supportive care environment.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • NYS RN and NP Licenses and ANCC Board Certification.

  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS (if applicable) Certification.

  • DEA Certification.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a clinical setting, preferably in college health or a similar environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • WHNP or FNP preferred.

  • Training in comprehensive adolescent and young adult care on a college campus of a historically women’s college

  • Proficiency in gynecologic procedures (cervical cancer screening, IUD placement, Nexplanon placement).

  • Experience in diagnosing and managing eating disorders and integrating mental health into primary care practice.

  • Training in trauma-informed care.

  • Strong commitment to health promotion, disease prevention, and evidence-based practice.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

  • Experience in community outreach and health education is highly desirable.

Working Conditions:

  • Fully in-person role, based on the Barnard College campus.

  • Participation in an after-hours on-call schedule is required.

  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary for outreach or educational activities.

Salary Range: $120,000 - $130,000 annually

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
