SUMMARY: The Historical Manuscripts Department seeks an experienced Manuscript Cataloger to create accurate, detailed catalog descriptions of historical manuscripts, autographs, documents, and archival materials for auction. The ideal candidate combines bibliographical expertise with historical insight to accurately present and contextualize items for collectors, scholars, and institutions.

COMPENSATION: Commensurate based on experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Research, authenticate, and catalog historical manuscripts, letters, documents, and archives for auction presentation.
- Write clear, detailed, and engaging descriptions emphasizing historical importance, content, condition, and provenance.
- Verify facts and details through primary and secondary sources to ensure accuracy.
- Evaluate autograph authenticity and identify handwriting, inks, and paper types.
- Collaborate with the department to prioritize catalog lots based on estimated value and significance.
- Edit and proof catalog text and imagery during production.
- Respond to questions from bidders and collectors regarding manuscripts and autographs.
- Support the handling, organization, and preparation of materials for photography and sale.
- Attend select auctions, previews, or manuscript fairs as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in History, Library Science, or Archival Studies preferred.
- Minimum five years of experience cataloging manuscripts, autographs, or archival collections in an auction, rare book, or institutional environment.
- Strong background in historical research and familiarity with documentary editing standards.
- Experience with 18th–20th century manuscripts preferred; familiarity with earlier material a plus.
- Proficiency in one or more foreign languages helpful.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Excellent historical research and writing skills.
- Deep understanding of manuscript authentication and descriptive best practices.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and deadline-driven.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Outlook.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
