About This Position
Are you passionate about transportation and providing valuable service to Iowans? Join the Iowa Department of Transportation as a Public Transit Intern and play an important role in supporting public transit across the state.
The Public Transit Planning Intern will work directly with DOT Modal Transportation Bureau – Public Transit team staff to update the Transit Asset Management Group Plan, the transit facility inventory and assessment, and provide support for other public transit functions. This position offers a collaborative work environment with the opportunity to work on project teams and contribute to project deliverables. Some in-state travel required, including possible overnight stays.
Public Transit intern duties (beginning Summer 2026 – up to 40 hours/week):
- Data collection and analysis to support the Transit Asset Management Group Plan
- Learning and applying the federal requirements for the Transit Asset Management Group Plan
- Technical writing and preparing graphics to show data
- Verbal and writing communication with transit stakeholders
- Introduction to Iowa DOT’s role in public transit throughout Iowa
- Other public transit related work, as assigned

Location: Ames
Shift: Days, Monday through Friday. Flex available. Some travel required, including overnight travel.
