Position: Cook and Catering Assistant

Start date: May 5, 2026

Location: L’Arche Winnipeg Inc.

Salary: $16.49

Duration: Temporary, full-time; 35 hrs/week; 16 weeks/560 hours; Tue-Sat; 7.30 a.m.-2.30 p.m.

Responsible To: L’Arche Café Manager

Since 2012, L'Arche Winnipeg's friendly social enterprise L’Arche Tova Café has been serving "Great food with heart" while providing an interactive space with social opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. The L’Arche Tova Café is a non-profit social enterprise that offers nutritious food to the public while serving as a training facility and a day program for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The Cook/Catering Assistant is responsible for preparing and cooking the café’s regular menu items, and supporting the Cafe Manager with Catering Services. The Cook/Catering Assistant will develop a thorough understanding of L’Arche and our social enterprise, the L’Arche Tova Café. The Cook/Catering Assistant will gain valuable employment experience in the areas of food preparation, food safety procedures and regulations, teamwork, customer service, disability services, non-profit work, and social enterprise.

Location: L’Arche Tova Café, 119 Regent Avenue West, Transcona

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Assisting the Café Manager with Catering Services, including but not limited to:

  • Receiving, planning, preparing, and fulfilling catering orders.
  • Ability to cook all types of food for special functions and catering orders.
  • Efficiently preparing and cooking all L’Arche Cafe menu items:
  • Maintaining composure and thriving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ensuring that prep work is done in a timely manner.
  • Minimizing spoilage and utilizing food surpluses.
  • Forwarding suggestions for improvements with menu items, cost savings and equipment.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment:

  • Ensuring that the kitchen equipment is well maintained according to safety health and sanitations standards
  • Following safety regulations in relation to food handling
  • Contribute positively to our community culture of inclusion and friendship, including but not limited to:

  • Developing a thorough knowledge of L’Arche and the social enterprise the L’Arche Tova Café.
  • Working well with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Ensuring good communication with front-end Café staff, including servers and volunteers.
  • Maintaining a good attitude and take initiative to assist your co-workers.
  • Upholding our core values of inclusion, respect, mutual care, compassion, peace, diversity.
  • Building relationships with core members with intellectual disabilities, and with L’Arche Assistants and Office Staff.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year experience cooking
  • Experience working with people with disabilities is an asset
  • High School Diploma (required)
  • Acceptable Criminal record check, Adult & Child Abuse Registry checks (required)
  • Eligibility:

    Due to Canada Summer Jobs funding, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Age 15-30
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
