Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Safety Superintendent leads the site safety program at Pinto Valley Mine, driving safety strategy, compliance, and continuous improvement across all operations. This role is responsible for building and maintaining a strong safety culture aligned with company values, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

The position oversees a team of safety professionals and works closely with site leadership, supervisors, and contractors to ensure consistent application of the safety management system, effective risk management, and safe production across the operation.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety Leadership & Culture: Lead and develop the site safety team while promoting a culture of accountability, hazard awareness, and continuous improvement across the workforce.

Regulatory Compliance & Engagement: Ensure compliance with MSHA and state regulations, serve as the primary contact during inspections, and manage the resolution of citations and violations.

Operational Safety Support: Partner with site leadership and supervisors to implement safety programs, procedures, and risk management practices across all departments.

Incident Management & Reporting: Oversee and coach incident investigations to ensure quality analysis, timely completion, and effective corrective actions, while monitoring trends to drive improvement.

Emergency Preparedness & Contractor Safety: Lead crisis management and emergency response readiness, including oversight of the First Responder team, and manage contractor safety programs from pre-qualification through field execution.

Safety Systems, Training & Performance: Maintain and improve the safety management system through audits and gap assessments, ensure effective delivery of regulatory and site training, and track performance metrics to support continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Engagement & Budget Management: Maintain working relationships with internal teams, contractors, and regulators while managing safety program budgets and supporting planning activities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required

• Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field

• Minimum 10 years of experience in health and safety within mining or heavy industrial operations

• Minimum 5 years of leadership or supervisory experience

• Demonstrated experience with MSHA and State Mine Inspector regulations

• Experience in incident investigation, reporting, and auditing

• Valid driver’s license

• Strong leadership and team development skills

• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

• Ability to coach and influence safe work behaviors

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and incident/root cause analysis systems

Preferred

• Experience in a safety leadership role within mining operations

• Experience leading emergency response or crisis management programs

• Experience managing contractor safety programs

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Combination of field-based and office-based work in an active open pit mining operation

• Frequent presence in operational areas including plant and mobile equipment environments

• Walking on uneven ground and navigating industrial work areas

• Exposure to dust, noise, heat, and varying weather conditions

• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times in operational areas

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required. Capstone maintains a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
