Pay Range -$35.00-$40.00
Job Summary:
The Safety Specialist plays a critical role in advancing a proactive, safety-first culture across all underground utility construction operations, with a focus on natural gas distribution projects. This position is responsible for field safety compliance, regulatory training, hazard identification, incident response, and continuous safety improvement in accordance with OSHA, DOT, and company standards. The Safety Specialist is a visible leader in the field, engaging with crews, supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure every individual return home safely each day.
Responsibilities:
- Independently conduct safety audits and inspections across multiple job sites, ensuring compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company standards.
- Work directly related to management and general business operations (safety compliance, risk management, regulatory adherence).
- Exercise discretion in identifying hazards, recommending corrective actions, and influencing operational decisions to mitigate risk.
- Serve as a primary responder for jobsite incidents, leading root cause analysis and implementing corrective measures.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs and orientations, tailoring content to project-specific requirements.
- Advise Supervisors and foremen on safety planning and execution, integrating regulatory requirements into operational strategies.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation and metrics for compliance reporting and continuous improvement.
- Represent the company in regulatory inspections, client meetings, and industry safety forums.
- Regularly exercises authority in safety decisions that significantly impact operations and compliance.
- Requires flexibility to respond to emergencies and meet project timelines beyond standard schedules.
Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA 1926, DOT Part 192/195, and utility construction safety standards
- Understanding of trench safety, pipe laying, live gas work, traffic control, and confined space entry
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Skilled in field coaching and real-time corrective action
- Analytical and investigative skills for incident root cause analysis
- Technologically proficient in Microsoft Office and digital safety platforms (e.g., iAuditor, SafetyCulture, or similar)
- Leadership presence in field operations; able to influence behavior without direct authority
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required
Required Education & Experience
- Bachelors Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or related field
- 2-4 years safety experience in utility construction, natural gas, or underground infrastructure work
- Working knowledge of OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926) and DOT Part 192/195 requirements
- Valid drivers license with clean driving record
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and digital inspection tools
- Comfortable working independently in the field with minimal supervision
Preferred Education & Experience
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification
- Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) / Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Certifications preferred
- First Aid/CPR/AED certified
- OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer
- Experience with behavior-based safety (BBS) programs
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred
