Lecturer of Human Rights

Job Description:

The Human Rights Program at Barnard College, Columbia University invites applications for a full-time lecturer position for an individual with demonstrated expertise in human rights theory and practice to begin July 2026. Barnard College is a premier liberal arts college for women located in New York City and is affiliated with Columbia University. The Human Rights Program was founded in 2000 and is one of the first undergraduate human rights majors. The Program provides an interdisciplinary major in human rights and courses in human rights.

The teaching load is 3+3 course per year. Non-teaching duties include advising students and participating in service at the departmental and college levels. The successful candidate will be able to teach introductory level and advanced courses on human rights theory, principles, law, and practice, including normative human rights course, such as the Program’s introductory class, Human Rights in Theory and Practice.

The successful candidate will also be able to develop classes that draw on the candidate’s substantive area of expertise. The particular area of topical expertise relating to human rights is open but suitable areas of expertise may include health, reproductive rights, and/or bodily autonomy; gendered, racial, and/or socio-economic inequalities; indigenous rights; LGBTQ rights; disability rights; climate change, animal rights, and/or environmental rights; migration; and peace and conflict studies.

Lecturers are reviewed in their third year of full-time service, with the possibility for reappointment and consideration for promotion to Senior Lecturer in the seventh year; subsequent reviews typically occur on a seven-year cycle.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a field related to human rights or have a terminal law degree (e.g. JD) and demonstrated expertise and experience related to human rights.

  • Teaching statement describing teaching philosophy, experiences, and interests

  • A writing sample of article or chapter length

Only semi-finalists will be asked to identify at least three references. Referees will receive an email notification instructing them to upload confidential letters of recommendation within one week of receipt of the email.

Salary: $88,000 - $94,000
