About This Position
The City of Coral Gables Firefighter position requires specialized work in the protection of life and property through combating fires, performing emergency medical rescue duties, participating in fire prevention activities, and maintaining fire department equipment, apparatus, and stations.

Responds to fire calls. Contains suppresses and extinguishes fires. Rescues potential victims and preserves property. Operates firefighting apparatus and equipment.
Responds to emergency rescue calls. Applies emergency medical techniques. Perform duties of a paramedic, perform emergency lifesaving procedures, read ECG strips, administer proper medications
Inspects buildings to detect fire hazards. Learns layout of the facilities and collects information for pre-fire planning.
Inspects, tests, and maintains fire hydrants. Determines operational readiness and learns hydrant locations.
Performs related duties as required.
- At least eighteen (18) years of age.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Valid Florida Driver's License
- State of Florida Certified Firefighter/Paramedic OR Certified Firefighter and enrolled in Paramedic School OR Certified Paramedic and enrolled in Fire School.
Note:
- Must be a State of Florida Firefighter/Paramedic at the time of Conditional job offer.
The Selection Process - A thorough background investigation will be conducted on applicants given employment consideration. The duration of the selection process is approximately 6-8 months. The process involves the following steps: (1) Online application, (2) Integrity Inventory written exam (3) National Firefighter Selection Inventory written exam (4) Physical Ability Test (5) Panel Interview (6) Chief Interview (7) Background Investigation (8) Physical Exam and Drug Screening and (9) Approval by the Hiring Board.
Possible Grounds for Disqualification:
Driving History - An unfavorable driving history may be grounds for disqualification such as a history of suspended and/or revoked driver's license (not insurance or toll related); Any reckless driving or DUI arrest and/or conviction.
Drug Use - No use of any illegal substance with marijuana being the only exception. The use of marijuana may be accepted if it was only experimental and did not occur within three (3) years of the application date and the subsequent processing period.
Criminal History - Applicants must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor relating to the certification or to perjury or false statements, or a felony or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more under the law of the United States or of any state thereof or under the law of any other country, or dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. "Convicted" means a finding of guilt or the acceptance of a plea of guilty or nolo contendere, in any federal or state court or a court in any other country, without regard to whether a judgment of conviction has been entered by the court having jurisdiction of the case.
Moral Character – An applicant, who, at any time during the application process, demonstrates, dishonesty, untruthfulness, withholds requested information, makes false statements, or whose background investigation reveals derogatory information, will be disqualified.
