Position Summary:

Under general supervision, the Research Accounting Analyst partners with faculty to provide comprehensive financial management and strategic analysis for research laboratories, including forecasting, budgeting, sponsored project administration and compliance oversight. The role includes managing faculty research financial portfolios of varying scope and complexity, based on the faculty needs, analyst experience, and Institute priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management & Compliance
    • Manage sponsored research awards and institutional portfolios, ensuring compliance with sponsor and institutional policies.
    • Create accounts, budgets and laboratory personnel effort allocations. Approve expenditures, and cost allocations to maintain fiscal integrity and adherence to sponsor guidelines.
  • Analytical & Reporting Expertise
    • Prepare and analyze financial reports, forecasts, and projections to support informed decision-making.
    • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities to optimize resource utilization and portfolio performance.
  • Faculty & Stakeholder Support
    • Partner with faculty to provide strategic financial guidance and proactive solutions, delivering exceptional customer service and timely resolution of inquiries.
  • Perform other related tasks, duties and responsibilities as required, assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained

Experience: One or more years’ related experience preferred. Financial Analyst experience is a plus

  • Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills to manage multiple priorities with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in a fast‑paced research environment.
  • Works independently and collaboratively to interpret financial data, resolve issues proactively, meet deadlines, and deliver high‑quality customer service.
  • Communicates effectively through clear, professional written and verbal correspondence and leverages advanced Microsoft Excel skills to analyze and optimize financial data.

When working on-site, the work environment is in a standard office setting. Frequently exposed to low to moderate noise, various odors, temperature changes, and equipment with moving parts, including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, and other standard office equipment.

If working from home, you are responsible for ensuring a quiet, organized, and comfortable setting, free from significant noise or distractions. The role requires the use of standard home office equipment, including but not limited to computers and phones. As you may be exposed to minimal noise and temperature variations depending on your home setup, it's important to maintain a workspace that supports productivity and well-being. Reliable internet connectivity and a suitable workstation are essential to fulfill job responsibilities effectively.

Physical Requirements:

This role may require specific physical capabilities, including:

  • Standing and Walking: Ability to stand for extended periods and move between different workstations.
  • Other physical activity: Occasional sitting, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling or twisting may be required.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Capability to lift and carry equipment and materials, typically up to 50 pounds, up to 6 feet in height, or up to 40 feet distance.
  • Manual Dexterity: Extended periods of repetitive use of their hand, including but not limited to simple grasping, power grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, pulling, reaching and keyboarding
  • Repetitive Motions: Comfort with repetitive tasks, such as pipetting or using laboratory machinery.
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to distinguish colors and details in specimens and data.
  • Bending and Stooping: Flexibility to reach and access equipment or samples stored at various heights.

Work Location: This is an onsite position; candidates must be willing to work onsite in San Diego. Out-of-state applicants must disclose their willingness to relocate.

Compensation: The expected hiring rate for this position is $65,447 - $77,384/annually commensurate with experience.
