About This Position
Overview:
The TAB Controls Technician is responsible for testing, adjusting, balancing, and verifying HVAC system performance while coordinating closely with building automation and controls systems. This role ensures that HVAC equipment, airflow, hydronic systems, and control sequences operate in accordance with design intent, project specifications, and applicable standards. The technician plays a key role in system commissioning, optimization, and turnover.
Responsibilities
Perform testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) of HVAC air and hydronic systems.
Verify proper operation of HVAC equipment, including air handling units, VAV boxes, fan coils, pumps, and terminal units.
Coordinate with controls technicians and engineers to validate sequences of operation and control point functionality.
Use controls systems to command equipment, adjust setpoints, and verify system response during testing.
Assist with functional performance testing and commissioning activities.
Identify and troubleshoot airflow, temperature, pressure, and control-related issues.
Verify sensor accuracy and proper control valve and damper operation.
Document TAB readings, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
Prepare accurate TAB reports and assist with commissioning documentation.
Communicate findings to project engineers, project managers, and field teams.
Ensure all work complies with project requirements, company standards, and safety regulations.
Maintain calibration and proper use of TAB instruments and tools.
Support system optimization and post-occupancy performance verification as required.
Qualifications:
Experience in HVAC Testing, Adjusting & Balancing (TAB) or HVAC service, controls, or commissioning.
Strong understanding of HVAC systems, airflow principles, and hydronic balancing.
Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS) and HVAC control sequences.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, control schematics, and specifications.
Proficiency using TAB instruments (airflow hoods, manometers, pressure gauges, temperature probes, etc.).
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as required.
TAB certification (AABC, NEBB, or TABB) preferred or willingness to obtain.
