About This Position

The Deputy City Administrator is a member of the executive leadership team. The incumbent will provide direct support to the City Administrator and staff, assisting with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the city, and providing oversight of strategic planning, administration, and municipal operations. The incumbent will operate with substantial latitude and serve in the City Administrator’s absence. The deputy will collaborate with and provide support to department heads, staff, and external partners. The deputy will serve as a special projects manager, leading or overseeing internal committees, strategic planning, collection, and integration of data for decision making, internal and external communications, and operations that impact the well-being of the staff and community. The deputy will ensure the accurate dissemination of information and policies and may represent the City Administrator at internal and external events and meetings when appropriate.


The deputy assists with reviewing policies, advising on grant proposals, and reviewing contracts. In addition, the deputy will manage and track tasks, in addition to time-sensitive information and requirements. The deputy will oversee or coordinate on strategic planning, emergency operations, communications and messaging, training, and policy formulation. The deputy will manage special projects, provide advice and guidance to the staff and council, and perform the duties of the City Administrator in their absence. The deputy will serve as an advisor to the City Administrator and provide direct oversight to specialized services such as Equity and Inclusion, Emergency Operations, Training, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, legal issues and tracking, and other priorities and initiatives as assigned.


  • Provide direct support to the City Administrator, Mayor, and Council.
  • Provide general support, coordination, and collaboration to dept heads and staff
  • Direct the collection of data, integration, analysis, and reporting
  • Prepare and deliver oral and written presentations on behalf of the City, as needed
  • Serve as Special Projects Manager
  • Strategic Planner for communications & outreach
  • Oversee information technology improvements and enhancements
  • Manages time-sensitive administrative and operational requirements.
  • Review and recommend updates to policies as needed
  • Represent the City Administrator on various boards and organizations on the local, regional, state, and federal levels and provide liaison with other external or City departments on related activities when requested
  • When requested and in the absence of the City Administrator, attend meetings of the mayor and council, citizen groups, and others
  • Provides Oversight and guidance on:
    • Cost-saving initiatives.
    • Emergency Operations, risk management, continuity planning, and safety
    • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
    • Parking Management
    • Customer Service improvements
  • Review and recommend updates to policies as needed
  • Represent the City Administrator on various boards and organizations on the local, regional, state, and federal levels and provide liaison with other external or City departments on related activities when requested
  • When requested and in the absence of the City Administrator, attend meetings of the mayor and council, citizen groups, and others

  • Proven strategic leadership in core municipal services and disciplines
  • Budget development policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and local ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations, and their impact on the community.
  • Skilled in the full Microsoft Office suite of programs and associated computer applications and hardware, related to effectively performing the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability and experience communicating clear, concise analysis of issues, priorities, and data- based reports to the Mayor, Council, and the public.
  • Ability to navigate complex municipal issues and make recommendations orally and in writing.
  • Incumbent must possess the ability to make decisions and act independently on a wide variety of municipal and operational issues.
  • Ability to maintain a harmonious and effective working relationship with City staff, Council, other public officials, residents, and the general public.

  • Our preferred candidate will have a master's degree in pubic policy or a relevant subject area and 10 (+) years of municipal government experience or a combination

  • A background in government planning, public/business administration, and executive-level management experience is desired.

  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 10+ years of relevant municipal, county, or other job-related experience may be considered for this position.

  • Candidates must have proven experience in multitasking.

  • Valid Driver’s License required with a good driving record.

Physical Demands and Working Environment
  • Work is conducted in an office environment.
  • Work may require lifting and carrying items less than 25 pounds, such as books, files, papers, etc.
  • Incumbent must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to act independently.
  • Work as an exempt employee with a normal daily schedule, but for various programs, may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergencies as required.
