Title: Operating Room Charge Nurse

Job Summary

Responsible for coordinating activities of personnel in the operating room according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the facility. Participates in planning work of assigned areas and coordinates activities with other patient-care areas. Ensures that patient needs are met. Works closely with manager in coordinating patient-care service functions.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Philosophy

a) Supports the facility’s ideology, mission, goals, and objectives

b) Performs in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures

c) Follows the facility’s standards for ethical business conduct

d) Conducts self in a professional manner, and as a positive role model and team leader

e) Recognizes patients’ rights and responsibilities and supports them in performance of job duties

f) Respects patient’s rights to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality

g) Maintains professional relationships with Management, Medical Staff and subordinates

2. General

a) Participates in facility committees, meetings, in-services, inventory and activities

b) Contributes input into short- and long-term goals for the facility

c) Maintains facility and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times, reports deficiencies to manager

d) Reports discrepancies in services provided by contracted providers (e.g., pathology, radiology, housekeeping) to manager

e) Supports positive leadership role; leads team by example; promotes professionalism in all communications and activities

3. Communication

a) Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers

b) Interacts with others in a positive, respectful, and considerate manner

c) Promotes effective communication between the clinical areas and the business office and physicians

d) Maintains open door policy with subordinate staff

e) Acts a liaison between Operating Room staff and Operating Room manager

f) Communicates confidentially on business and personnel related matters

4. Financial practices

a) Promotes cost containment and efficient use of facility resources

b) Makes recommendations to Operating Room manager for potential cost-effective improvements

c) Assists in monitoring FTE utilization and coordinated with Operating Room manager to make recommendations to promote cost-effective practices

5. Compliance program

a) Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the organization’s adopted compliance program

b) Performs according to established compliance policies and procedures

6. Performance-improvement program

a) Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the organization's adopted performance-improvement program, policies, and procedures

b) Performs according to established performance-improvement policies and procedures

c) Successfully contributes to the performance-improvement process

7. Safety/risk-management program

a) Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities

b) Implements practices and regulations adopted to provide safety in the healthcare environment

c) Monitors the facility's physical environment and initiates methods for maintaining safety, comfort, cleanliness, and orderliness; reports physical environment status to manager

d) Responds to emergency situations competently

e) Ensures that OSHA requirements are met by clinical staff and that supplies are readily available

f) Reports any unforeseen circumstances or incidents to manager.

8. Professional competence

a) Participates in continuing education and other learning experiences

b) Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities

c) Welcomes suggestions and recommendations

d) Makes suggestions to Operating Room manager for continuing education of clinical staff members

e) Assists with orientation programs for new employees in clinical area

9. Patient care

a) Applies accepted clinical principles and practices to patient-care activities in the facility

b) Coordinates patient-care activities with surgeons and anesthesia providers to provide continuity of patient care

c) Assists Operating Room manager in identifying and solving departmental patient care problems

d) Assists Operating Room manager to oversee all activities during an emergency to verify that patient needs are met

e) Participates in primary care of patients as needed and oversees clinical areas to verify that patients’ needs are met

f) Assists Operating Room manager to enforce the implementation of practice standards and licensing and accreditation rules/regulations to provide quality patient care

g) Recommends to Operating Room manager any revision in patient-care policies and procedures as necessary to conform to accepted principles and practices

h) Respects patients’ right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality

i) Monitors the care of the operative area and the equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times

j) Controls staff/patient traffic to help prevent infections

10. Daily operations

a) Prepares daily personnel assignments and delegates duties according to experience and skill level to provide quality patient care

b) Serve as resource and mentor for operating room staff

c) Assists in cross-training clinical staff to create a productive work environment for all clinical areas

d) Assists the Operating Room manager in evaluating the performance of all clinical personnel and for assessing and continuously improving the quality of care and services

e) Observes performance of clinical staff members in the operating room and provides feedback to Operating Room manager

f) Ensures that staff implement established facility policies and procedures

g) Participates in designated committees, to include COC meetings

h) Analyzes clinical documentation to ensure facility’s policies/procedures are followed

i) Serves as a liaison among patients, families, nursing, and medical staff to coordinate quality patient care

j) Promotes harmonious relations and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team

Qualifications

1. Cooperative work attitude toward co-employees, management, patients, visitors, and physicians

2. Ability to promote favorable facility image with physicians, patients, insurance companies, and general public

3. Ability to make decisions and solve problems

Requirements

Required

1. Graduate of accredited school of nursing

2. Registered Nurse with active license in the state of Kentucky

3. CPR, ACLS and PALS certification

4. Evidence of leadership qualities

5. Language skills adequate for high-level written, interpersonal and telephone communication

Preferred

1. ASC experience

2. EPIC experience
