Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Credit Underwriter- Onsite

Position Overview

This role is responsible for delivering a sound, independent, and objective assessment and recommendation regarding risk factors associated with small business, midsize, large, and complex structures and transactions in Commercial and Industrial (C&I) lending. The position also oversees credit risk management and the maintenance of credit quality for the assigned portfolio by monitoring relationship trends, clearing exceptions, properly assessing and evaluating credit risk and other key factors, and providing recommendations and credit solutions aligned with the relationship's risk profile.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide transactional support in the preparation of credit memos, ensuring a clear understanding of the Bank's credit programs, policies, and adherence thereto; report all deviations from credit programs and policies to the supervisor.
  • Conduct analysis and underwriting functions as required; support new business activities by screening preliminary data, following up on required documentation, and ensuring conformity with the Bank's credit underwriting policy; prepare documentation, memos, and presentations as needed.
  • Perform annual reviews of existing credit relationships; identify necessary risk rating changes, errors, or inconsistencies; recommend modifications to risk ratings as appropriate, including calculation and verification of covenant testing requirements and monitoring of loan policy exceptions.
  • Support the accurate review and evaluation of the financial condition and operating performance of C&I borrowers for new and existing loan exposures, increases, and modifications of terms or conditions.
  • Conduct large and complex financial analyses with a high degree of accuracy in figures and credit risk assessment; identify loan policy exceptions and industry- or loan structure-specific risks/issues, along with appropriate mitigating factors.
  • Identify, evaluate, monitor, and make recommendations to the supervisor as necessary to assess, reduce, eliminate, or control current or prospective risks to earnings or capital arising from violations of, or nonconformance with, laws, rules, regulations, prescribed practices, internal policies and procedures, or ethical standards.
  • Assist in the review and measurement of borrower conformance with legal covenants, tracking compliance, and identifying instances of non-compliance; collaborate with other bank units such as Credit Administration, Loan Operations, Credit Services, Closing areas, and Credit Risk, as well as Credit Portfolio Managers and Relationship Managers.
  • Assist in the training of new underwriters, including guidance on departmental operating procedures, various formats used, and credit criteria applied to different forms of analysis.
  • Complete or review and provide feedback on spread financial statements, comprehensive analyses, and credit approval packages in accordance with Bank credit programs and policies.
  • Utilize software systems for loan originations, modifications, annual reviews, and other presentations to senior management.
  • Administer and monitor maturities, delinquencies, and criticized assets reports on a regular basis; assist in identifying "red flags " or problems within the portfolio and report all portfolio issues and irregularities to the supervisor.
  • Conduct project site visits/inspections and report findings.
  • Provide assistance in other departmental areas as required, including coverage during vacations or absences.
  • Ensure full compliance with applicable regulations, including BSA, USA PATRIOT Act, OFAC, AML requirements, and internal policies; implement preventive measures related to these risks.
  • Assist management with ongoing projects and perform any other duties as assigned by the Chief Credit Officer or supervisor.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or finance is required; a Master's degree is preferred. Alternatively, 5+ years of credit underwriting/credit analysis experience may substitute for the degree.
  • Formal credit training is preferred.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of professional experience in credit underwriting and/or credit analysis, with demonstrated knowledge of banking products and documentation.
  • Thorough understanding of the Bank's credit procedures, programs, and policies; strong grasp of accounting and credit principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required; experience with SQL is a plus. Familiarity with Salesforce, nCino, or FIS IBS is advantageous.
  • Sound time management and organizational skills; well-organized and systematic approach to work.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
