Position Summary
The Field Safety Technician – Hydro Excavation is responsible for supporting safe hydro excavation operations by monitoring job sites, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and assisting field crews with hazard identification and safe work practices. This role plays a critical part in preventing incidents during excavation activities around underground utilities and critical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Field Safety Oversight
  • Monitor active job sites to ensure compliance with company safety policies and client safety requirements.
  • Conduct job site safety inspections and audits.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and safety equipment by field personnel.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and work with supervisors to implement corrective actions.
  1. Hydro Excavation Safety Oversight
  • Monitor hydro excavation operations to ensure safe excavation practices.
  • Verify compliance with excavation permits, utility clearances, and job safety analyses (JSAs).
  • Ensure crews follow safe excavation procedures and client safety requirements.
  1. Utility & Excavation Safety
  • Support safe digging practices around underground utilities.
  • Verify proper potholing and daylighting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with utility protection standards.
  1. Field Safety Monitoring
  • Conduct safety audits and job site inspections.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and specialized excavation safety equipment.
  • Monitor equipment operation and crew safety practices.
  1. Incident Prevention
  • Identify potential excavation hazards including utilities, unstable ground conditions, and confined work areas.
  • Assist with incident investigations and corrective action plans.
  1. Safety Communication
  • Conduct or assist with daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Provide real-time safety guidance to hydro excavation crews.
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness across the job site.
  1. Reporting & Documentation
  • Maintain daily safety logs and inspection reports.
  • Document incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
  • Communicate safety concerns to operations leadership.
Qualifications
  • Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 2+ years experience in industrial safety, environmental services, or related field preferred
  • Experience with hydro excavation or vacuum truck operations strongly preferred
  • Certifications (Preferred)
  • OSHA 30
  • TWIC Card
  • Basic Plus
  • DISA compliant
  • First Aid / CPR / AED
Skills & Competencies
  • Knowledge of excavation safety practices
  • Familiarity with underground utility protection
  • Strong hazard recognition abilities
  • Effective communication and field leadership skills
  • Ability to work in dynamic field environments
Work Environment
  • Work performed in industrial job sites and construction environments
  • Exposure to outdoor conditions and heavy equipment
  • Night shifts and extended hours may be required
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to wear required PPE including respirators when required
