About This Position

Are you excited to work with a dynamic team of individuals helping students, staff, and faculty be successful in their teaching and learning journey? Whitworth University is seeking an instructional designer who will collaborate with faculty, subject matter experts, staff, and academic teams to develop high-quality, accessible, effective, and engaging courses using a variety of delivery methods and systems. Working with members of the information systems team, the instructional designer will assist with technical support, consult with stakeholders in regard to instructional technology implementation, and develop, plan, and participate in faculty development. This position also supports the creation of instructional materials and appropriate guidelines in areas such as fair use, copyright, and ADA (Section 508).

Program and Course Development | 25%
  • Provide instructional design consultation to faculty.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, students and subject matter experts to design, develop, and adapt synchronous and asynchronous courses using a variety of delivery methods.
  • Consult and support faculty throughout the course development process.
  • Assist faculty and staff in applying appropriate guidelines to courses in areas such as fair use, copyright, ADA (Section 508), identity validation, and other emerging regulations and matters.
  • Create course templates and guides for the learning management system and instructional tools.
  • Train and support faculty, staff, and students in the use and development of multimedia and performance support applications and tools.
  • Maintain current knowledge of instructional technology tools, strategies, resources, and best practices communicating them to faculty and staff.
  • Assist in the ongoing assessment and evaluation of courses and programs.
  • Keep abreast of emerging instructional and technological trends in teaching and learning.
Training and Workshop Development | 25%
  • Provide training and support to faculty for courses and course development in instructional design, instructional technologies, and systems.
  • Create documentation and materials for instructional technologies.
  • Develop, produce, and conduct video and face-to-face workshops in instructional design, instructional technologies, and systems for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Support individuals with accommodations by working with Human Resources, Student Life Student Success, and faculty to provide training and assistance in best practices.
  • Work with university librarians to provide training and support in the use of academic databases and open education resources.
Operations | 25%
  • Function as an integral member of a cohesive team providing high-quality service defined by goals rather than a narrow list of duties.
  • Work closely with the information systems team to support faculty, staff, and students with courses and programs in the learning management system, integrated systems, and applications.
  • Track, respond, and resolve help desk tickets.
Course Review | 15 %
  • Conduct periodic course reviews for regulatory compliance.
  • Communicate with faculty and staff when courses do not meet regulatory guidelines in areas such as fair use, copyright, ADA (Section 508), etc.
Additional Contributions | 10%
  • Review and recommend instructional and training materials.
  • Assist members of Instructional Resources, Information Systems, and the library.
  • Participate in: meetings, special projects, department and university initiatives and events.


  • A bachelor’s degree required in instructional design, instructional/educational technology, or other closely related field.
  • 2 years of experience in instructional design, curriculum design, or related field.
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a comprehensive Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
  • Willingness to work and cross-train with other members of the instructional technology and information systems teams.
  • Experience in instructional design and course development using a variety of delivery methods.
  • Understanding of the ADDIE model.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information, and maintain professional discretion and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and compliance as it pertains to teaching and learning.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems, applications, and systems related to instruction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of instructional theory and practice applicable to a variety of delivery methods.
  • Working knowledge of emerging technologies, electronic resources, and information access.
Core Competencies
  • Ability to work with faculty from a wide range of disciplines to design appropriate learning resources (text, presentation, web-based, audio, video, etc.).
  • Proficient in Microsoft O365 applications, Adobe Acrobat, and design software applications.
  • Experience with the use and development of multimedia (audio, video, graphics, etc.) and emerging technologies as applied to face-to-face and distance education.
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • Ability to write clear, concise explanations of complex concepts and engaging, accessible course content for diverse audiences.
  • Strong oral and written communication.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across the university and with networks of professional colleagues.

Schedule
Full-time (1.0 FTE) | 12 months | 40 hours per week
Whitworth office hours are 8 AM to 4:30 PM Monday – Friday
