Field Service Apprentice in Dayton, Minnesota at PwrQ Holdings LLC

The Field Service Apprentice is the entry-level position on the Forgent Power field service career ladder. This role learns the fundamentals of electrical field service through hands-on training under the direct supervision of higher-level technicians and engineers. The apprentice supports basic maintenance, inspection, and testing activities while building the technical knowledge, electrical safe work practices, and professional habits required to advance. Success is measured by safety compliance, training completion, attention to detail, and demonstrated readiness to take on independent task ownership.

Key Responsibilities

Learning & Qualification

• Work alongside Field Service Technicians and Field Service Engineers to learn maintenance, inspection, and testing procedures on low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment.

• Observe and assist with switchgear, breaker, ATS, generator, transformer, and PDU service activities.

• Complete assigned Technical Qualification Program (TQP) modules, OEM training, and certifications on schedule.

• Ask questions, take notes, and apply mentor feedback to build technical skill.

Field Support Tasks

• Perform basic visual inspections under direct supervision and report findings.

• Assist with cleaning, lubrication, and basic mechanical checks on field equipment.

• Stage tools, test equipment, and parts at the work site; support setup and teardown.

• Assist with measurements such as voltage, continuity, and basic insulation resistance under direct supervision.

• Support documentation by recording observations, readings, and equipment data on test sheets.

Transformer Fundamentals

• Observe and assist with inspections on dry-type, cast-coil, pad-mount and liquid-filled transformers.

• Assist with visual checks of external transformer components — tank, radiators, bushings, oil level and temperature gauges, breathers, cooling fans and pumps, grounding connections and anchors — and report findings.

• Assist with recording transformer nameplate data, tap position, and gauge readings.

• Assist with transformer cleaning and housekeeping, and with staging oil-handling equipment and spill containment.

• Learn transformer construction, cooling classes, and the purpose of each protective and monitoring device.

Safety, Isolation & Grounding

• Participate in lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding activities, and verification of zero-energy states under direct supervision.

• Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and on-site safety briefings.

• Wear required PPE at all times and follow all NFPA 70E, OSHA, and customer site safety requirements.

• Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment concerns to the senior technician on site.

Tools, Materials & Vehicle Care

• Maintain accountability for assigned tools, test equipment, and materials.

• Help load, unload, and organize service vehicles; ensure tools are clean and serviceable.

• Track and report tool calibration, damage, or replacement needs.

Professional Practices

• Communicate professionally with team members, supervisors, and customer personnel.

• Arrive on time, in proper uniform and PPE, and prepared for the day's work.

• Complete time entries, expense reports, and basic field documentation accurately.

• Represent Forgent Power positively at customer sites at all times.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or GED required.

• 0–2 years of experience; no prior electrical field service experience required.

• Strong willingness to learn the electrical field service trade.

• Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use common hand tools.

• Ability to read and follow written procedures, safety instructions, and basic technical documentation.

• Ability to take direction, accept feedback, and work as part of a crew.

• Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be at least 21 years of age to be assigned and operate a company-provided service vehicle; apprentices under 21 travel as part of a crew.

• Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record, required and maintained throughout employment; reliable transportation to the home shop.

Preferred

• Active enrollment in or completion of a trade school, electrical program, or registered apprenticeship.

• Military electrical, electronics, or maintenance training (e.g., Navy electrician, Army prime power, Air Force electrical systems).

• Prior experience in industrial maintenance, construction, automotive, or other hands-on trade roles.

• OSHA 10 certification.

• Basic familiarity with multimeters, hand tools, or shop equipment.

• Any exposure to dry-type or liquid-filled transformers in a maintenance, utility, or manufacturing setting.

Tools & Technology

• Hand tools, basic power tools, and standard shop equipment.

• Mobile field service applications, time tracking systems, and basic Microsoft Office tools.

Working Conditions & Travel

• Primarily field-based at customer facilities including industrial plants, utilities, data centers, commercial facilities, and substations.

• Travel typically 25–50%, primarily as part of a senior technician's crew; may include occasional nights, weekends, or overnight stays.

• Participates in the regional on-call rotation only as part of a crew, and only once qualified to do so.

• Apprentices are deployed as part of a senior technician's crew. Project assignments may run several weeks or longer; assignments outside the home region follow the crew's field rotation.

• Work may be performed in confined spaces, on elevated platforms, in hot/cold environments, and around rotating machinery and energized equipment in accordance with safety rules.

• Must be able to wear required PPE including arc-rated clothing, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and fall protection as needed.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and move test equipment and tools.

• Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb ladders and stairs, and work at heights for extended periods.

• Ability to differentiate conductor colors and indicator states and to read instruments and displays.

• Ability to assist with moving heavier equipment alongside team members.

• Ability to perform sustained physical work outdoors and in industrial environments.
