Function of Position:

The Outreach and Community Engagement Coordinator supports the Optical Systems Technology (OST) program by implementing outreach, recruitment, and community engagement initiatives that increase awareness of optics and photonics careers and expand enrollment in MCC's Optical Systems Technology degree, certificate, micro-credential, apprenticeship, and workforce training programs. The Coordinator builds and maintains relationships with K-12 schools, employers, workforce organizations, community groups, veterans' organizations, and affinity organizations throughout the greater Rochester region. The Coordinator plans and executes recruitment events, campus visits, industry tours, and other outreach activities that connect prospective students with educational and career opportunities in optics and photonics, supporting the continued growth of MCC's nationally recognized Optical Systems Technology program. The successful candidate is an enthusiastic, highly organized relationship builder who enjoys working with people, developing community partnerships, and inspiring students to pursue rewarding careers in optics and photonics.

*This is a temporary, grant-funded position that may be renewed annually contingent upon availability of grant funding and performance reviews. This position is eligible for paid time off and benefits.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implements recruitment and outreach strategies to increase awareness of optics careers and grow enrollment in the Optical Systems Technology (OST) program.
  • Develops and implements marketing initiatives promoting the Optical Systems Technology program.
  • Coordinates all aspects of distributing information to schools, employers, and organizations in consultation with the Admissions Office and EDIWS Marketing staff.
  • Coordinates and represents the Optical Systems Technology program at recruitment events, career fairs, STEM events, and community outreach activities.
  • Coordinates and conducts on-campus tours and visits for the OST program.
  • Coordinates tours of regional industry sites for faculty, staff, enrolled MCC students, dual enrollment teachers, high school students, and their families.
  • Collaborates with OST staff, College Now office, and area high schools to increase dual enrollment high school programs.
  • Coordinates current OST student assistants for outreach events and activities.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with school counselors, teachers, community organizations, employers, workforce agencies, veterans' organizations, and affinity groups.
  • Conducts presentations at schools, career fairs, community organizations, and employer events to promote optics careers.
  • Maintains records of outreach activities, community partnerships, and recruitment outcomes and prepares reports to assess program effectiveness.
  • Attends Optical Systems Technology Program and Advisory Board meetings.
  • Provides weekly planning updates to OST staff and faculty.
  • Holds orientations once a month for the Optical Systems Technology program.
  • Assists with grant activities, including data collection, reporting, outreach, and proposal development, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Department Chair.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution OR earned an associate's degree from an accredited higher education institution along with two (2) years' experience in a related field.
  • Ability to research, develop, implement, and assess recruitment strategies.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, customer service, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to build relationships across diverse audiences.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated professional with the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish meaningful relationships with diverse populations.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for recruitment and community events.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Flexible and able to travel to various work locations, job fairs, schools, companies, organizations, and other events as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited higher education institution.
  • Experience in student recruitment, admissions, outreach, workforce development, community engagement, marketing, business development, or a related field.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages proficiently.


Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity, and college budget. This position has a range of $52,000 to $55,000 and is based on the factors mentioned.

MCC offers a Flexible Work Policy for benefit-eligible employees. Types of flexible work arrangements include flextime/staggered shifts, remote work/telecommuting, and compressed work schedule. The availability of flexible work arrangements varies by division, department, and position, based upon business and operational needs. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: The physical demands and working conditions described below are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This position involves primarily sedentary work, including prolonged periods of computer use and keyboarding. The role requires the ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. The position may involve occasionally lifting or moving items up to 10 pounds. Work is performed in a typical office environment with no adverse conditions. Occasional travel between campus buildings or to other local or out-of-town locations for meetings or conferences may be required.

Prohibition of Remote Work Outside New York State: Remote work locations outside New York State are not authorized by the College due to out-of-state tax and regulatory implications. In limited circumstances, prompted by business or operational needs, the College may approve requests to work remotely outside of New York State, on a short-term, temporary basis.
