Department Overview

The Clinical Engineer supervises the implementation of specialized medical and laboratory

instrumentation and equipment modifications; analyzes and provides consultation on new medical and

laboratory equipment needs; provides in-service teaching and training; analyzes complex medical or

laboratory equipment to define corrective maintenance and to develop appropriate preventive

maintenance. This is the first of a two level series. The Clinical Engineer is distinguished from the higher

level by having a lesser knowledge base of technical medical and laboratory equipment, as well as the

degree of difficulty, complexity and scope of projects. The Clinical Engineer may need closer supervision

and mentoring in problem solving and decision making skills.

Function/Duties of Position

Project Management.

  • Represents Clinical Technology Services on technology and facility projects and new system implementations.

Technical Consultation.

  • Provides technical advice to assist medical, nursing, and other technical personnel in pre-purchase planning and selection of cost-effective equipment appropriate to their needs; researches specific types of equipment and prepares costs benefit and life cost analysis; participates in the generation of purchase specifications for new equipment and the tests the equipment must pass prior to acceptance (e.g., ease of maintenance, operation, reliability of vendors, cost and availability of maintenance parts, and cost of disposables used); consults on proposed building and area renovations and reviews plans for remodeling to assure cost effective compatibility with equipment needs. Conduct assessment of medical technology, write technical specifications and participate on value analysis teams as Clinical Technology

Incident Investigations and Recalls.

  • Oversee review and investigation of Product Recalls and weekly Hazard Alerts; perform incident investigations as assigned

In-Service (Teaching or Training).

  • Prepares and conducts technical in- service programs, workshops, or seminars for nurses and medical staff on theory and operation of newly installed equipment, explaining the theory of operation, operating procedures, calibration, operator maintenance responsibilities, and safety; conducts similar programs on in-use equipment and general electrical safety as required by the DNV conducts programs for technical staff and other interested personnel on variety of technical and measurement principles, servicing concepts, and applicable codes and standards related to the variety of equipment employed in the hospital, clinics, and laboratories and the equipment used to maintain them.

Other Duties as Assigned


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical or Clinical Engineering OR

  • Certification by ICC/USCC as a Clinical Engineer OR

  • Associate's degree in biomedical technology and ten years of BMET experience OR

  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Clinical Engineering, technology Management, or Computer Science.
  • 2 years related experience
  • Advanced skills in Access, Excel, report design, Oracle, experience in clinical engineering department operations or medical equipment management
  • CCE, CBET
