We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead the accounting function for Superior Rigging & Erecting. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will serve as the senior accounting leader responsible for the accuracy, integrity, timeliness, and control of the company's financial reporting and accounting operations.

This is a true Controller role with clear ownership of accounting. You will lead the monthly close, general ledger, construction accounting, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, revenue recognition, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, internal controls, audit preparation, and development of the accounting team.

The Controller and Chief Financial Officer have separate and distinct responsibilities. The Controller owns the company's accounting function and financial reporting integrity. The Chief Financial Officer owns broader enterprise finance, financial strategy, forecasting, capital planning, treasury, banking, bonding, and executive financial leadership.

This is a full-time, in-person position based at our corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Candidates must be willing and able to work onsite. Relocation may be considered; however, there is currently no relocation assistance or relocation package associated with this position.

What You Will Do

• Lead the company's accounting function and maintain accountability for accurate, complete, and timely financial reporting.
• Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end accounting close processes.
• Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure balance sheet accounts are properly reconciled and supported.
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements, schedules, reconciliations, and supporting financial information.
• Lead construction accounting, including job costing, project cost allocation, work-in-progress reporting, revenue recognition, retainage, and overbillings and underbilling's.
• Review project financial information and partner with project management and operations to ensure costs, contract values, change orders, estimates, and projected margins are accurately reflected.
• Identify unusual project costs, margin changes, billing issues, or financial variances and ensure they are investigated and resolved.
• Ensure appropriate revenue recognition for project-based contracts in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and applicable accounting standards.
• Provide accounting leadership and oversight for accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash application, and related accounting processes.
• Maintain appropriate controls over vendor setup, invoice approval, payment processing, credits, write-offs, journal entries, and other financial transactions.
• Oversee fixed asset and equipment accounting, including acquisitions, disposals, transfers, capitalization, depreciation, and reconciliations.
• Manage intercompany accounting and ensure transactions between entities, departments, and locations are properly recorded and reconciled.
• Develop, document, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, close calendars, approval requirements, and internal controls.
• Strengthen segregation of duties and financial controls throughout the accounting cycle.
• Lead preparation for annual financial statement audits and coordinate accounting documentation requested by external auditors.
• Support tax, banking, bonding, insurance, and other external financial reporting requirements by providing accurate and properly supported accounting information.
• Maintain strong financial controls within the company's accounting and enterprise resource planning systems.
• Partner with Human Resources and Payroll to ensure payroll-related accounting entries, labor allocations, liabilities, and balance sheet accounts are accurately recorded and reconciled.
• Lead, coach, develop, and hold accountable members of the accounting team.
• Establish clear responsibilities, deadlines, review standards, and backup coverage within the accounting department.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, automation, reporting, and financial data integrity.
• Provide the Chief Financial Officer with reliable financial information and accounting analysis necessary to support broader financial and business decisions.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leader with direct responsibility for financial reporting and the accounting close
• Significant experience within construction, specialty contracting, industrial services, heavy equipment, infrastructure, manufacturing, or another project-based environment
• Strong construction accounting experience, including job costing and work-in-progress reporting
• Strong understanding of project-based revenue recognition
• Demonstrated experience leading monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
• Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
• Experience preparing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules
• Experience overseeing general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, and fixed asset accounting
• Experience developing and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Experience supporting external financial statement audits
• Strong accounting systems and enterprise resource planning experience
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to identify accounting issues, determine root causes, and implement sustainable solutions
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with accounting, project management, operations, and executive leadership
• Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and hold an accounting team accountable
• High degree of accuracy, judgment, integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Public Accountant designation
• Experience with multi-entity or multi-location accounting environments
• Experience with structural steel, steel erection, crane and rigging operations, heavy transportation, industrial construction, infrastructure, or other specialty contracting environments
• Experience working within labor-intensive and equipment-intensive businesses
• Experience with percentage-of-completion or over-time construction accounting methodologies
• Experience managing accounting through enterprise resource planning implementations, conversions, or significant process changes
• Experience building or improving accounting departments, close processes, internal controls, and financial reporting systems
• Experience developing and leading high-performing accounting teams

• The accounting team demonstrates stronger capability, accountability, and consistency.
• The Chief Financial Officer can focus on enterprise financial strategy because the Controller has strong ownership and control of the accounting function.
