Job Description

Role Title: Carpenter II

Reports To: Lead Carpenter; Project Manager for job assignments | Direct Reports: None | Department: Production

Hours: Full-time, 40 hrs/week plus overtime as required, onsite

ROLE CONTEXT

The Carpenter II is a technically complete carpenter and Red House's on-site leader for day-to-day production when the Lead Carpenter is elsewhere. They can execute every category of residential carpentry the company performs - independently, correctly, and to the company standard — and they direct the work of Carpenter I and Apprentice employees, manage quality and safety in real time, and keep the site running at the pace the Lead Carpenter and Project Manager expect. This role deliberately preserves the craft track: a Carpenter II who directs excellent work, keeps the site clean and safe, and earns the crew's trust is a high-value role in its own right.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITY

Execute all categories of residential carpentry with full technical independence, as assigned by the Lead Carpenter or Project Manager, and lead the job in the field in the Lead Carpenter's or PM's absence. Runs smaller jobs independently of LC when assigned. This position must demonstrate the company's core values of Care, Clarity, and Trust.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Journey Level Carpentry
  • Quality Control
  • Safety
  • Lead Job (in the Lead Carpenter's or PM's absence)
  • Job Site Customer Satisfaction
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Journey Level Carpentry
  • Skill 4 (Advanced): lay out and install all aspects of residential framing — floor systems, walls, simple gable, shed, and hip roofs; work independently to install all standing and running trim including interior doors, hardware, window and baseboard trim; lay out and install a kitchen per plans and accommodate the appliances; fully lay out and install roofing, windows, siding, exterior trim and details, decks, and railings; problem-solve unique carpentry situations; completely understand blueprint reading and lay out from plans, discussing any plan information in proper terminology; full understanding and use of available materials and a full materials list for a complete job; understand general building code rules and know how to find code information.
  • Skill 5 (Journey), all of the above plus: exceed quality and allotted time for all aspects of residential carpentry including framing, roofing, windows, siding, flashings, and staging; exceed quality and time expectations in all interior finish carpentry including basic trim, crown molding, finish stair work, site-built cabinet construction and installation, and curved work; have, understand, and implement proper tool use, maintenance, and storage.
  • Skill 6 (Master), all of the above plus: exceptional quality, precision, and timeliness; knows and uses skills for all aspects of carpentry and cabinetry; work is referred to as the standard for the company; full understanding of all plans, can troubleshoot plans, develop better solutions to problem areas, and draw or relate information to others.
  • Know and understand all plans and specifications for assigned work; get answers before proceeding when plans are unclear or conflict with conditions.
  • Maintain a full Carpenter II tool kit on site at all times per the RHDB Carpenter Required Tool List.
  1. Quality Control
  • Responsible for quality control on every task you touch and on the work of employees under your direction; supervise Carpenter I and Apprentice work for conformance with Red House standards.
  • Perform the framing and rough-in quality check before work is covered — plumb, level, square, rough openings, blocking, MEP — including on trade-partner framing, and correct or flag deficiencies before the next phase.
  • Check subcontractor work at completion for completeness and conformance before authorizing departure or reporting it complete to the Lead Carpenter or PM.
  1. Safety
  • Enforce all safety policies on site — PPE, fall protection, tool handling, staging — for yourself and everyone under your direction, without prompting.
  • Ensure dust protection and site protection are installed before work begins each day; keep the site broom clean daily, vacuum clean weekly, and clean as seen from the street.
  1. Lead Job (in the Lead Carpenter's or PM's absence)
  • Run smaller jobs independently and/or direct one or more additional employees when assigned: quality control, working with and directing subcontractors, obtaining and getting the proper materials and equipment to and from the job.
  • Assign daily tasks to crew members to make efficient use of time and labor; in the Lead Carpenter's absence, keep all employees on task and productive.
  • Subcontractor coordination when directed: have the work area ready on the scheduled day, ensure subs clean up — or clean up after them.
  • Write the BuilderTrend Daily Log on any day you are the Red House person on site, so the Red House's three-per-week-per-job standard is met without gaps.
  • Daily, inform the Lead Carpenter or Project Manager of progress on the assigned project, including client concerns, problems, and delays.
  • Assist the Lead Carpenter in ordering materials to minimize mid-day lumberyard runs; receive deliveries, track jobsite inventory, flag replenishment needs; submit all receipts.
  1. Job Site Customer Satisfaction
  • Interact with clients daily in a courteous, professional manner; represent the company well; communicate client concerns or questions to the Lead Carpenter or PM immediately.
  • Ensure the image of the company is upheld by the appearance and conduct of everyone on site.
  • Protect the client's home, property, and finished work at all times.
  1. General
  • Can direct others; understands and complies with company SOPs and can teach those under your direction.
  • Complete and submit your own timecard daily; attend all company meetings approved by the Production Manager; attend seminars and shows for product and installation knowledge.
  • Demonstrate open and active learning; seek additional responsibility and guidance to build toward Lead Carpenter if that is the chosen path.
  • Demonstrate a reliable work ethic: tasks done cheerfully, on time, at least 40 hours per week and overtime as required.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
  • Zero avoidable safety incidents on any job where you are the senior person on site; zero safety violations observed on PM site visits.
  • Framing/rough-in QC check completed and documented (photo + Daily Log note) before cover on 100% of assigned jobs; zero cover-up rework attributable to a missed check.
  • Work passes Lead Carpenter/PM quality check first time on 95%+ of tasks; rework on own work or work under your direction under 2% of task hours.
  • Jobs you run independently finish within the estimate's labor hours on 80%+ of jobs; variance flagged to the PM as soon as it is visible, not at the end.
  • Help ensure each assigned project has at least 3 daily logs published per week.
  • Zero unsigned change-order work; scope questions to the LC/PM the same day.
  • Full Carpenter II tool list owned within 12 months of placement.
  • OSHA 10 and RRP current
LEADERSHIP AND BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES

Self (universal):

  • Instills Trust — Reports problems early and honestly.
  • Demonstrates Self-Awareness — Knows the difference between their craft strengths and weaknesses; accepts feedback on both.
  • Being Resilient — Stays calm and even-tempered when the schedule, the sub, or the plans change.

Role-relevant:

  • Ensures Accountability — Owns quality and safety for the whole site on the days they lead it, not only for their own hands.

  • Customer Focus — Courteous, discreet, and proactive with clients; escalates rather than improvises on scope.
