Department Overview

The emergency department technician (ED Tech) position is part of the healthcare team in the Emergency Department. The ED tech performs tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and as directed by the department nurse manager. The ED tech will operate partly as a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC), will assist in the maintenance of supplies pertaining to the Emergency Department, and will assist with quality assurance activities for the Emergency Department. This individual has the ability to communicate data reflective of the patients’ status and delegated tasks to the RN or provider in charge of patient care. The ED tech assists the patient, patients’ families, visitors, nursing staff, and other support staff to assure the delivery of quality care in a safe and comfortable environment. The ED tech demonstrates ability to provide care (as described below) to patients across the age continuum (infants, toddlers, pre-school, school-age, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients). ED Techs contribute to the success of the department and support team members.

We Have DAY and NIGHT shift openings.

Function/Duties of Position

I. Patient Care
A. Observes all infection prevention guidelines.
B. Assists with admitting and discharge patients.
C. Obtains accurate vital signs and patient weights.
D. Gathers and secures patient valuables.
E. Completes all unit specific ED tech documentation in the patient’s medical record.
F. Performs 12-lead EKG per standard.
G. Performs wound preparations and applies simple dressings as directed by the RN or LIP.
H. Performs ortho splinting as directed by RN or LIP.
I. Provides safe patient mobilization using aids, as directed, for safety and notifies the nurse of additional needs.
J. Performs or assists with proper and safe patient lifts, transfers, turns and positioning.
K. Provides for safety; bed in low position, side rails, items within reach, identified hazards and assistance.
L. Assures patient maintains good body alignment, comfort, range of motion (ROM), and support.
M. Responds to call lights. Assures that call lights are within reach at all times.
N. Collects and tests specimens as directed (blood, urine, stool, other).
O. Assists the patient with toileting and hygiene needs.
P. Records I&Os.
Q. Provides emotional support as needed.
R. Provides and maintains needed comfort measures e.g. blankets, pillows, etc.
S. Performs postmortem care per policy.
T. Greets visitors and family members and provides information within unit defined standards.
U. Provides and obtains shift reports as needed or as directed.
V. Escorts/transports patient via wheelchair/stretcher to various locations within the hospital.
W. Assists with monitoring of equipment alarms. Notifies nurse appropriately.
X. Rounds/observes patients at least hourly, responding to all patient needs, and reports observations as needed or directed.
Y. Performs all duties necessary to assure delivery of prescribed diet and meets all dietary needs.
Z. Provides safe and proper application, observation, and documentation of restraints/seclusion. Observes disoriented/confused patients per division guidelines or as directed.


AA. Assists RNs, physicians, and other health care team members as needed.
BB. Performs phlebotomy for obtaining blood specimen.


II. Indirect care:
A. Maintains the patient care area.
B. Cleans equipment and area in conjunction with environmental services.
C. Keeps dirty utility rooms clean and free of debris and excess supplies.
D. Distributes linen and supplies.
E. Transports specimens, equipment and medications.
F. Maintains awareness of equipment operation and reports broken or missing equipment per OHSU standards.
G. Orders supplies as necessary.
H. Stocks patient rooms and carts as needed or as directed.
a. Resus rooms
b. IV carts
c. GYN, ENT, Lac carts
d. Disinfect or discard equipment/supplies appropriately


I. Supports administrative operations
a. Facilitates unit communications
b. Receives, screens, transfers, and places phone calls: coordinates post-discharge concerns and paperwork appropriately
c. Facilitates faxes and assists with paging
d. Schedules hospital transport requests
e. Coordinates other patient transports, including trip tickets
f. Scans and assembles medical records
g. Maintains the work station, supplies, resource materials
h. Sends/receives materials in P-tube
i. Reconciles EPIC downtime entries
j. Copies materials as requested


III. Quality
A. Assists Departmental Leadership in their efforts to monitor and evaluate applicable standards.
B. Maintains quality assurance around Point of Care Testing.
C. Maintains current knowledge of departmental benchmarks and initiatives; works toward continuous process and system improvement.
D. Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and staff.


Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One-year recent experience (within the past 3 years) providing patient care in an emergency department or similar setting.
  • Phlebotomy for lab draw
  • 12-lead EKG placement
  • BLS/CPR upon hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA
  • EMT, CNA, MA and or equivalent education
  • Phlebotomy certification or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree
  • Current experience providing patient care in an emergency department or similar setting.
