Senior Lending Services Underwriter

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Lending Services Underwriter based in the United States.

This role is a senior-level underwriting position responsible for evaluating a broad range of consumer lending products, including complex and high-risk credit scenarios. You will act as a key decision-maker within the lending function, applying advanced credit judgment to ensure sound, consistent, and compliant lending decisions. The position combines analytical rigor with hands-on underwriting authority across both automated and fully manual review processes. You will regularly assess layered financial profiles, collateral risk, and exception-based applications, with a particular focus on HELOCs and other sensitive lending products. Acting as a subject matter expert, you will guide less experienced underwriters and support credit quality across the portfolio. This is a highly collaborative role, working closely with operations, leadership, and cross-functional teams to strengthen lending performance and consistency.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will evaluate and decision a full range of consumer lending applications while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong credit quality standards across all outcomes. You will apply structured underwriting frameworks while exercising senior-level judgment for complex and exception-based cases.

  • Underwrite and decision consumer lending products including credit cards, personal lines of credit, auto loans (direct and indirect), and HELOCs, including high-risk cases
  • Review applications through automated, referral-based, and fully manual underwriting workflows, with deep focus on complex HELOC evaluations
  • Analyze layered credit profiles, income variability, and collateral risk to determine appropriate lending structures and risk mitigation strategies
  • Serve as an escalation point for junior underwriters, providing guidance on policy interpretation and complex credit decisions
  • Ensure all decisions are well-documented, consistent, and aligned with internal credit policies and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Participate in quality control efforts, identify risk trends, and contribute to continuous improvement of underwriting standards and processes
  • Collaborate with operations, processing, and leadership teams to align credit decisions with operational execution and business objectives
  • Support training, system testing, workflow design, and other initiatives that enhance underwriting effectiveness and consistency
Requirements

This role requires strong experience in consumer lending underwriting, advanced credit analysis skills, and the ability to operate independently in complex decision-making environments. You should be comfortable balancing risk, compliance, and operational efficiency while maintaining high attention to detail.

  • 5+ years of experience in consumer lending underwriting or credit decisioning
  • Strong expertise in evaluating complex financial profiles, including layered credit and income structures
  • Experience underwriting HELOCs and high-risk lending scenarios strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with loan origination systems such as MeridianLink or similar platforms
  • Deep understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and credit policy application
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks including fair lending, ECOA, and related credit regulations
  • Ability to serve as a subject matter expert and mentor to junior team members
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills
  • Strong judgment, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across operations, leadership, and support teams
