Description:

The Speech-Language Therapist leads the process in development, implementation, and coordination of the student’s communication to facilitate students being able to access the general curriculum. The Speech-Language Therapist utilizes research based practices and a holistic perspective to promote functional communication, independence, student safety and appropriate collaboration.

Essential Accountabilities

Values Staff Members:

  • Collaborate, train and conduct check-ins with team to ensure understanding of student strengths and needs
  • Attend and participate in IEP and ETR meetings

Values Students:

  • Assist in the implementation of functional communication by formulating the student’s profile through a variety of standardized assessments, skill observation, histories, and interviews
  • Provide comprehensive written evaluation and progress reports reflecting student strengths and needs
  • Develop research based intervention plans based on student needs and evaluation results
  • Participate in team meetings to review evaluation results, offer recommendations, and develop individual education plans
  • Coordinate the development of the IEP by determining appropriate individualized treatments to meet student needs
  • Evaluate student ability and formulate student communication treatment plan through a variety of functional, behavioral, and standardized assessments, skilled observation, histories, and interviews

  • Communicate and educate family to facilitate communication within the home
  • Maintain parent communication by completing treatment notes
  • Attend meetings to support families with meaningful communication goals
  • Provide continuing education and in-services for staff and parents

Belief in Students:

  • Adapt and modify lessons to promote student participation
  • Advise on multi-modal communication to help students with daily activities
  • Assist in the supervision of students at school activities and events. Remains
    vigilant of students throughout the school day and the school location, taking the initiative to engage students when students
  • Advocate on behalf of each student’s well being to student’s team

Operates with Integrity:

  • Document services to ensure accountability and to meet standards for reimbursement of services
  • Prioritize and schedule work tasks independently
  • Manage inventory of speech materials, AAC and assessments
  • Adhere to federal, state, and local certification requirements, and company policies by maintaining clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards
  • Work collaboratively in a professional learning community with other teachers, support staff, and others as appropriate, in addressing the needs of students, developing effective practices, and developing and implementing best practices
  • Operate and Comply with standards set by the American Speech and Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) and the Ohio Speech Language and Hearing Association (OSLHA)
Requirements:
  • Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Valid Ohio Dept. of Education Pupil Service License
  • A valid State of Ohio Speech and Hearing Professional’s Board License
  • ASHA CCC’s
  • Experience with PECS and/or AAC devices
  • Knowledge of Verbal Behavior preferred
Physical Demands
  • This position can require or involve some degree of physical interaction with students who have difficulty controlling physical behavior.
  • Must be able to use a variety of equipment for children with special needs.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, instruct, and listen to students and staff.
  • Must occasionally lift, move and/or support up to 50 pounds (and/or up to adult size body weight with two-to-three person lift).
