Position Title: Grain Accounting and Merchandising Assistant
Department/Location: Grain - Clinton
Reports to: Head of Merchandising
I. Primary Function: (Describe the purpose of this position to the Department/Function. State in terms of objectives and primary goals. What is the reason this position exists?)
The purpose of position is to take a highly driven individual and teach them every discipline within our grain division
II. Major Duties and Responsibilities: (Describe the 5 essential activities performed in carrying out the objectives of the position, including: significant tasks, responsibilities, projects and decisions.)
a. Learn disciplines from the following departments within the Grain division.
i. Accounting: Basic understanding of accounting software Agris, contract/ticket/settlement review, accounts receivable management, entering/editing/amending contracts, customer account review.
ii. Merchandising/Origination: Basic understanding of all grain contracts, communicating with producers and end-users, managing physical grain trading positions by monitoring HPR/contracts, ability to understand and perform trade arbitrage, intercompany contracts/trades.
iii. Risk Management: Basic understanding on functions of managing risk in grain trading, running hedge desk, reconciling daily HPR, performing audit/risk mitigation procedures.
iv. Logistics: Basic understanding on shipping/receiving lanes for truck/rail/barge transportation methods, calculating transportation rates, communicating with shippers/receivers, reviewing freight invoices, creating & communicating shipping schedules
v. Grain Grading: Basic understanding of grading procedures for corn/soybeans/wheat, operating one-weigh & performing procedures for scale operations, performing purity & toxin tests, organizing scale tickets & samples, communicating inbound and outbound quality with outside operations
vi. Outside Operations: Basic understanding on operations functions of an elevator, quality management, safety procedures/practices/software, repair & maintenance procedures, inventory management/software, PLC operations
II. Additional Responsibilities: (List additional non-essential duties which are nevertheless typically performed by the job incumbent. This is a list of some, but not all responsibilities.)
a. Assist co-workers with projects within the grain division including investments, acquisitions, projections, & strategic planning
b. Complete data analytics for the Head of Merchandising, Vice President of Grain, and President to assist with business decisions.
c. Maintaining accurate and organized grain documentation
d. Understanding and following the practices/procedures stated in The DeLong Company grain policy
IV. Required Skill/Knowledge: (What specific types of skills/knowledge are required to perform the job? What kind/amount of experience is required?)
a. 1 year agricultural business experience or farming background
b. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
c. Familiarity with accounting software à AGRIS
d. Strong communication skills.
e. Demonstrate organizational skills.
f. Ability to accept responsibility and be vocal within the organization.
V. Preferred Skills/ Knowledge: (Ideal skill set)
a. 1+ year experience in any of the following fields

iii. Accounting
iv. Business
v. Agriculture
vi. Economics
VI. Education Level / Required Certification:
a. 4-year college degree or equivalent industry experience

The ability to understand, research, and resolve any problem that relates to the responsibilities of this position. Should be able to brainstorm, communicate, and work with others to come up with best possible solution.
VIII. Internal/External Contacts: (Describe the nature, reason, frequency of contacts with others made in the performance of the job.)
Internal: Members of all grain division staff
External: Producers, End Users, Brokers, Industry Professionals, Auditors
IX. Supervisory Responsibility/ Authority to: (Total number of exempt and non-exempt reports. Authority to make what types of decisions.)
Has authority to make decisions as it pertains to major duties & responsibilities with oversight of Head of Merchandising, Vice President of Grain, and Accounting Staff.
