Title: Dental Laboratory Technician

Location: San Diego, CA (Eastlake, Miramar, North Island, Point Loma)

Position Type: Part time (16-29 hours/week) or Full time (30-40+ hours/week), hourly.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Education Level: High School diploma or equivalent is required.

Summary:

Vighter is recruiting Dental Laboratory Technicians to provide patient care support at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA. The Medical Facilities in and around San Diego are rated as a complex medical facility, therefore provides care to Active-Duty Military, Veterans, Veterans and Family members locally and from surrounding states. The Dental Laboratory Technician provides specialized technical support for military dental treatment facilities by fabricating, modifying, repairing, and maintaining dental prosthetic appliances and devices. The Dental Laboratory Technician works under the direction of licensed dentists, prosthodontists, oral surgeons, and dental officers to produce high-quality dental restorations and appliances.

This position performs a variety of laboratory functions including the fabrication of crowns, bridges, dentures, removable partial dentures, orthodontic appliances, occlusal guards, custom trays, implant-supported restorations and other dental prostheses. The Dental Laboratory Technician must maintain strict adherence to quality standards, infection prevention protocols, occupational safety requirements, and regulations while ensuring the timely completion of laboratory work.

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Fabricates complete dentures, removable partial dentures, crowns, bridges, implant-supported restorations, orthodontic appliances, occlusal splints, bleaching trays, mouthguards, and other dental prosthetic devices in accordance with dentist prescriptions and treatment plans.
  • Constructs wax patterns, metal frameworks, acrylic appliances, ceramic restorations, and composite restorations using established laboratory techniques and manufacturer specifications.
  • Produces highly accurate restorations that meet clinical, functional, and aesthetic requirements while ensuring patient comfort and long-term durability. Utilizes dental models, impressions, digital scans, and laboratory prescriptions to fabricate dental appliances and restorations.
  • Performs relines, rebases, adjustments, polishing, and refinishing procedures as necessary.
  • Collaborates with dental providers to ensure repairs and modifications meet treatment objectives.
  • Documents all repair activities and maintains records of completed work.
  • Operates computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems used for digital dental restorations. Utilizes digital scanning systems and design software to create prosthetic appliances and restorations.
  • Assists with operation and maintenance of milling machines, 3D printers, scanners, and other digital laboratory equipment.
  • Operates laboratory equipment including casting equipment, porcelain ovens, acrylic processing units, milling machines, CAD/CAM systems, articulators, vacuum mixers, model trimmers and polishing equipment. Performs routine maintenance, cleaning, and operational checks on laboratory equipment.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions and coordinates repair services as necessary. Maintains equipment calibration records and maintenance logs.

  • Knowledge of regulations (HIPAA/Privacy Act) regarding the confidentiality of patient medical records and information as well as Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have exceptional customer service skills.
  • Employees shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the job requirements, including ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment with limited supervision
  • Excellent organizational, scheduling and prioritization skills.

Education:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Qualifications:

• A minimum of two (2) years of dental laboratory experience performing fabrication and repair of dental prosthetic appliances.

• Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Strong team building skills and ability to motivate others.

• Team-player mindset and willingness to collaborate;

Duty Hours / On-call Requirements:

  • Generally speaking, this is a day shift position with some work, mission dependent, at night and on weekends..

  • Location: San Diego, CA

Travel:

  • As required to satisfy the contractual obligations. Commuting is non-compensatory. All official travel is government funded.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand or sit for more than 8 hours per day.
  • Must be able to use an elevator or walk up & down stairs.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and carry up to 10 feet.
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.
  • Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Must be able to perform duties in an indoor office or outdoor environment.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
  • Must undergo Urine Drug Screening (UDS).
  • Must be a Citizen of the United States or legally authorized to work in the United States of America.

Work Schedule: Services Shall be provided Monday through Friday, between the hours of 0630 – 1500 hours. Shifts are provided between Monday through Friday and will be scheduled for 8-hour period, not including an uncompensated 30-minute lunch break. In no instance will HCW be required to provide services more than 80 hours per two-week period.
