Job Description
The Senior Engineer - Electrical provides senior technical leadership for discipline design, quality, mentoring, and problem solving across multiple projects. This role is expected to exercise independent professional judgment, establish technical direction, perform and lead QA/QC, develop staff, and help project teams deliver coordinated, constructible, code-compliant work.
- Perform and document electrical load calculations, feeder and branch-circuit sizing, voltage-drop calculations, and equipment selections appropriate to the assigned level.
- Design and coordinate normal and emergency power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, grounding/bonding, and electrical connections for building systems.
- Develop one-line diagrams, panel schedules, lighting plans, power plans, details, schedules, and specifications that accurately communicate design intent.
- Coordinate electrical requirements with mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, architectural, structural, civil, and specialty systems.
- Support short-circuit, selective-coordination, arc-flash, generator, UPS, and other specialized studies when included in project scope.
- Coordinate fire alarm, telecommunications, security, and other low-voltage systems when required by project scope, while clearly defining discipline boundaries.
- Establish discipline design criteria and technical approach for complex projects; resolve difficult technical and coordination issues.
- Lead discipline QA/QC, including review of calculations, drawings, specifications, and interdisciplinary coordination before issue.
- Mentor engineers and designers, provide timely technical feedback, and raise the technical capability of the team.
- Support project managers with scope definition, fee development, staffing, risk identification, client communication, and change management.
- Represent the discipline in client meetings, design reviews, construction meetings, and discussions with authorities having jurisdiction as needed.
- Work with a high level of ownership, responsiveness, professionalism, and follow-through; communicate problems early and contribute constructively to team solutions.
- Support a positive, accountable team culture by helping others succeed, accepting feedback professionally, sharing knowledge, and maintaining high standards for quality and effort.
- Meet the role target utilization of 75% net over appropriate measurement periods while maintaining quality, client service, teamwork, and sound professional judgment.
- Some travel is required to document existing conditions, meet with clients and project teams, and perform site observations and punch-list activities.
- Must be comfortable using electronic devices such as iPads to document existing conditions, field observations, and client notes, and must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to safely climb ladders and access roofs, mezzanines, equipment rooms, and similar areas as required to perform job duties.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related ABET-accredited engineering program.
- Typically 9+ years of relevant electrical building-systems design, consulting engineering, or closely related experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred and generally expected for independent engineering leadership and sealing responsibilities.
- Demonstrated record of technical leadership, QA/QC, mentoring, client communication, and successful delivery of complex building-systems projects.
- Working knowledge of the NEC, building and energy codes, and common electrical design standards.
- Autodesk Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft 365, and applicable electrical calculation/lighting software; familiarity with AGi32, ETAP, EasyPower, SKM, or similar tools is beneficial depending on role.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a remote professional environment.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, project managers, architects, clients, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
