NON-EXEMPT POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Ultrasound Technologist

JOB CODE: 180

REPORTS TO: Radiology Director/Manager or designee

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Radiology Director/Manager and/or Lead Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations and assists with related procedures. Technologists provide safe, respectful patient care and produce complete, high-quality images in accordance with physician orders, department protocols, and hospital policy. Technologists work closely with physicians, nurses, and other staff to support patient care and keep department workflow moving.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs assigned diagnostic ultrasound examinations, including general, abdominal, obstetrical, gynecological, vascular, breast, small-parts, pediatric, portable, emergency, and other studies within the technologist’s demonstrated competency and assigned scope of practice.

2. Reviews the physician order, clinical history, consent, patient preparation, and other required documentation before beginning the examination.

3. Identifies the patient using the hospital’s two-identifier policy and confirms the correct examination, order, side, and site.

4. Explains the examination to the patient, answers questions within the technologist’s scope, and provides clear instructions throughout the procedure.

5. Transfers and positions patients with care, using appropriate assistance and proper body mechanics.

6. Selects the appropriate transducer and protocol and adjusts technical factors to obtain the best possible diagnostic images for each patient.

7. Reviews images and measurements for completeness and technical quality before sending the study for interpretation.

8. Completes the examination accurately in Cerner/RIS and confirms that images, measurements, documentation, and study status are correctly transmitted to PACS according to department workflow.

9. Assists physicians with invasive and noninvasive procedures and follows sterile technique when required.

10. Recognizes urgent findings or changes in a patient’s condition and immediately notifies the radiologist, ordering provider, nurse, or other appropriate clinical staff in accordance with hospital policy.

11. Protects the patient’s privacy, dignity, comfort, and safety throughout the examination.

12. Follows infection-prevention requirements, manufacturer instructions for use, and department procedures for cleaning, disinfection, and high-level disinfection of ultrasound equipment and transducers.

13. Performs required equipment checks, reports equipment problems promptly, and helps maintain appropriate supplies in the work area.

14. Maintains working knowledge of Ultrasound policies, procedures, equipment, supplies, PACS, RIS, HIS, and other systems used by the department.

15. Participates in department quality assurance, competency, education, and process-improvement activities as assigned.

16. Participates in assigned weekend, holiday, on-call, and backup-call coverage. When called in for backup coverage, reports to the hospital within 30 minutes of notification.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Communicates clearly and professionally with patients, physicians, coworkers, and other hospital staff.

2. Uses medical terminology correctly and documents information accurately.

3. Uses sound judgment, works independently within the scope of the position, and responds appropriately during emergencies and high-volume situations.

4. Completes all required annual education, competencies, health requirements, and department training.

5. Maintains all required licenses and certifications, including current BLS/CPR certification.

6. Follows the district’s behavioral standards, attendance expectations, safety requirements, and other applicable policies.

7. Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with applicable privacy, safety, and regulatory requirements.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

WORK ABILITIES

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

1. Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program or an equivalent education and clinical pathway that meets ARDMS or ARRT eligibility requirements.

2. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, ultrasound principles, patient care, and the safe operation of ultrasound equipment.

3. Ability to organize and prioritize work, perform examinations independently, and respond appropriately in emergency and high-volume situations.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

1. ARDMS credentialing or ARRT certification and registration in Sonography is preferred at the time of hire. Employees must pass the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination and obtain an applicable ARDMS specialty credential or ARRT certification and registration in Sonography within one (1) year of hire. Continued employment is contingent upon meeting this requirement.

2. Current BLS/CPR certification is required.
