Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) - Acute Care/Medical-Surgical Unit provides comprehensive nursing care to patients requiring medical, surgical, observation, and transitional inpatient services. The RN utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate patient care while collaborating with physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals. This position promotes safe, patient-centered care, supports quality outcomes, and ensures compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.

The RN serves as a patient advocate and clinical resource while fostering a healing environment that emphasizes safety, compassion, professionalism, teamwork, and evidence-based practice.

Essential FunctionsPatient Assessment & Care Planning

Performs comprehensive nursing assessments upon admission and throughout hospitalization.Develops, implements, and updates individualized plans of care based on patient needs and physician orders.Recognizes changes in patient conditions and initiates appropriate interventions.Prioritizes nursing care according to patient acuity and clinical needs.

Direct Patient Care

Administers medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions according to physician orders and nursing standards.Monitors patient responses to treatments and medications.Provides wound care, IV therapy, blood product administration, and other nursing procedures within scope of practice.Maintains patient safety through ongoing assessment, monitoring, and intervention.

Care Coordination

Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to support effective treatment plans.Participates in discharge planning and transition-of-care activities.Communicates patient status, care needs, and treatment progress to providers and team members.Coordinates patient transfers and referrals as appropriate.

Documentation & Compliance

Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and timely within the electronic health record.Maintains compliance with nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.Protects patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.Participates in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and regulatory surveys.

Patient & Family Education

Educates patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, medications, discharge instructions, and self-care management.Assesses learning needs and adapts educational approaches to support understanding.Encourages patient participation in healthcare decisions.

Quality & Safety

Adheres to infection prevention and control standards.Identifies and reports patient safety concerns, adverse events, and near misses.Participates in quality improvement activities and performance initiatives.Supports organizational goals related to clinical quality, patient satisfaction, and patient outcomes.

Education & ExperienceRequired

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of West Virginia or multistate compact licensure eligibility.Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.Ability to perform nursing assessments and clinical interventions across a variety of patient conditions.

Preferred

One (1) year of acute care, medical-surgical, emergency, critical care, or inpatient nursing experience.Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, if required by department.Experience with electronic health records and inpatient clinical documentation systems.

Physical Requirements

Frequent standing and walking throughout scheduled shifts.Frequent lifting, transferring, repositioning, and assisting patients.Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and greater weights with assistance.Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling.Manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment and perform nursing procedures.Visual acuity sufficient to assess patients and review clinical documentation.

Hospital and inpatient nursing environment.Frequent exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and bodily fluids.Exposure to hazardous medications, cleaning agents, and medical equipment.Potential exposure to emergency situations and high-stress clinical conditions.May work weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, rotating shifts, and on-call assignments as required.Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
