Job Description

Senior Writer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Writer based in Canada.

We are seeking an experienced game writer to craft compelling characters, memorable dialogue, and immersive narratives that bring interactive worlds to life. In this role, you will help shape the storytelling direction of a game while ensuring narrative content aligns with its creative vision, gameplay, and established style. You will collaborate closely with creative leadership, designers, artists, and other disciplines to transform concepts into polished, production-ready content. Beyond writing original stories and dialogue, you will contribute to narrative implementation, editing, and continuity across the player experience. This hands-on position also offers opportunities to mentor fellow writers, share creative feedback, and strengthen narrative quality across the team. The role supports remote work within Canada, with hybrid and in-office options available and a strong preference for candidates based in Edmonton, Alberta.

Accountabilities
  • Collaborate with design directors and project leadership to establish and maintain narrative themes, tone, style, and storytelling direction in support of the intended player experience.

  • Create engaging characters, dialogue, quests, storylines, biographies, motivations, relationships, and character arcs that remain consistent throughout the game.

  • Write and revise combat barks, quest banter, lore, and other in-game text, adapting the writing style to the project's creative needs.

  • Deliver high-quality narrative content in line with production targets, communicating progress, dependencies, and potential challenges to support timely delivery.

  • Translate story outlines, narrative concepts, and creative briefs into production-ready content, incorporating feedback through drafting and revision.

  • Partner with designers, artists, and other team members to integrate storytelling with gameplay mechanics, worldbuilding, and visual presentation.

  • Edit and review narrative content for clarity, pacing, continuity, character voice, and consistency with established lore and style guidelines.

  • Implement and refine narrative content using game engines or project tools, collaborating across disciplines to resolve technical constraints and issues identified through playtesting.

  • Contribute to narrative documentation, including story outlines, style guides, and supporting creative materials.

  • Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to less experienced writers and narrative designers, helping improve the quality and consistency of the game's storytelling.

Requirements
  • Significant professional writing experience in the gaming or entertainment industry, including writing contributions to at least one released game.

  • Strong understanding of interactive storytelling and game design fundamentals, including experience creating branching dialogue or nonlinear narratives.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop engaging stories and distinctive characters with consistent voices, motivations, and emotional depth.

  • Proven ability to understand and work within an established brand, creative direction, narrative tone, and style.

  • A track record of producing high-quality written content consistently while managing independent assignments, competing priorities, production deadlines, and revision cycles.

  • Strong editing and revision skills, with an eye for clarity, structure, pacing, continuity, and consistency.

  • Ability to interpret creative feedback and make meaningful revisions that align with project objectives.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to present narrative ideas clearly and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong research and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to adapt creative concepts to technical, production, and resource constraints.

  • Experience implementing narrative content in game engines such as Unreal or Unity, or comparable narrative development tools.

  • A current portfolio or writing samples demonstrating relevant professional work must be included with the application.

  • Availability to complete a writing or other assessment as part of the recruitment process, if required.

Additional assets:

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in English, Creative Writing, Theatre, Film, or a related discipline.

  • Familiarity with JIRA, Perforce, and other production management or version-control tools.

  • Experience developing narrative style guides, maintaining continuity across large volumes of content, and mentoring fellow writers.

  • Candidates based in Edmonton, Alberta, are strongly preferred.

Benefits
  • Competitive annual salary ranging from CAD 80,000 to CAD 100,000, based on experience and qualifications.

  • Three weeks of paid vacation.

  • Generous paid sick leave and additional paid personal days.

  • Paid studio closure during the holiday season.

  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits, including enhanced mental health support.

  • RRSP matching to support long-term financial planning.

  • Flexible work arrangements, with remote, hybrid, and in-office options.

  • A collaborative creative environment that encourages idea-sharing, professional development, and meaningful contributions to the player experience.

  • The opportunity to help shape engaging interactive narratives and collaborate with a multidisciplinary game development team.
