Technical Designer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Technical Designer based in Canada.

The Technical Designer will play a key role in shaping immersive gameplay experiences within an innovative game development environment.
This position combines creative design thinking with technical expertise to bring gameplay concepts from prototype to polished implementation.
You will collaborate closely with designers, artists, engineers, and production teams to create engaging systems, features, and interactive content.
The role offers the opportunity to contribute to an ambitious cooperative horror exploration project while working in a remote-first studio culture.
You will help solve complex gameplay challenges, improve workflows, and push the boundaries of interactive storytelling and player experiences.

Accountabilities:

The Technical Designer will be responsible for designing, prototyping, implementing, and refining gameplay features while collaborating across disciplines to deliver engaging and technically optimized player experiences.

  • Prototype, develop, and iterate on gameplay content, including game flow, interactive objects, player abilities, scripted events, narrative and audio triggers, tutorials, and support systems.
  • Implement and refine gameplay mechanics while ensuring they align with creative goals and technical requirements.
  • Collaborate with designers and artists to improve content implementation, maximize available technology, and achieve high-quality gameplay outcomes.
  • Partner with engineers to translate gameplay concepts into functional systems while considering performance, scalability, and technical constraints.
  • Identify and resolve gameplay issues through debugging, testing, and continuous iteration.
  • Work with producers and leadership teams to evaluate requirements, provide estimates, and communicate progress toward project milestones.
  • Contribute ideas and solutions that enhance gameplay experiences, workflows, and development processes.
  • Support the creation of innovative features that deliver engaging cooperative and immersive player experiences.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate combines strong technical design experience with creativity, problem-solving abilities, and a passion for interactive entertainment. You should be comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and have experience delivering complex gameplay systems.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in game development, including at least 2 years in a Technical Designer role.
  • Strong experience with Unreal Engine 5, including Blueprint scripting, gameplay implementation, debugging, and working with complex gameplay systems.
  • Familiarity with modern text-based scripting languages and technical workflows.
  • Experience shipping at least one game product, ideally within exploration, horror, or narrative-driven genres.
  • Strong understanding of gameplay design principles and the ability to transform concepts into engaging player experiences.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and adapt in a dynamic development environment.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines.
  • Passion for entertainment products, including games, films, comics, novels, or other storytelling mediums.

Nice-to-have qualifications:

  • Experience developing or playing cooperative gameplay-focused titles.
  • Experience creating innovative gameplay mechanics or original interactive systems.
  • Strong interest in horror exploration games and immersive experiences.
  • Passion for contributing to ambitious, high-quality game projects.
