Position Information


Under the general supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist and Laboratory Supervisor, this position works with other members of the lab team to process patients, collect blood, urine and other specimens, and process specimens for in-house testing and send-outs to a Reference Laboratory. This position performs phlebotomy and specimen processing duties, and efficient venous puncture on students by following phlebotomy policies and procedures established by the UCR Student Health Services Clinical Laboratory. Performs test requisition verification and patient identification either electronically or on paper, and performs computer entry of lab orders both in-house and send outs. This position necessitates the knowledge of the proper specimen handling and collection techniques and the correct Order of Draw. Assists the CLS in the setup of CLIA-waved test. This position has direct involvement in quality assurance studies, greater quality compliance record keeping, and maintaining supplies. This position may include providing clinical resource leadership/training in phlebotomy and/or specimen processing.Please be advised that this position is a per diem position. A per diem appointment is an appointment to complement or substitute for career and limited appointments, when necessary, to maintain appropriate staffing levels for temporary periods. An appointee may be scheduled on a pre-scheduled basis or as needed on a day-to- day basis or called off from a pre-established schedule as determined by the University. The full salary range for the Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomist is $29.00 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Minimum Requirements
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and ability to have respect for all patients and co-workers with diverse cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
Manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity to perform the required duties.
Familiarity with Standard (Universal) Precautions, handling of bio hazardous waste.
Ability to work quickly and accurately and to communicate, interact and be cooperative with patients and all personnel in the facility.
Ability to write legibly and be attentive to details.
Ability, on a daily basis, to assess overall workload for any area that needs help, and help co-workers without being reassigned by the supervisor.
Understanding of lab tests' clinical usefulness.
Ability to use good judgment in deciding when to seek clarification and assistance; be able to multi-task and to prioritize tasks in order of importance.
Ability to perform duties in a professional manner and put patients at ease.
Computer skills necessary to function in Windows application.
Be knowledgeable of the proper specimen handling and collection techniques and the correct Order of Draw.
Actively participates in all QI/QA projects and assisting the CLS in the introduction of new tests, procedures, and methodologies as well as in the training of new staff in the laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of lab equipment and supplies. Orders, monitors and maintains a consistent supply of phlebotomy consumables.
Working knowledge of quality control principles and recordkeeping.
Familiarity with EMR Software (Point and Click) & LIS (Harvest-Orchard).
Ensures compliance with relevant documentations supported by the laboratory including but not limited to submitting completed CMR reports to providers and to RPH, COVID results to state agencies, and other reportable documents, no shows report, scanning and sending results by Sfax, and other related responsibilities as may deemed necessary.
Performs various clerical and other related miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the CLS and Laboratory Supervisor/Manager.
