Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Metallurgist is responsible for supporting and optimizing metallurgical processes across concentrator operations by providing timely, accurate technical analysis and recommendations that improve plant performance, metal recoveries, and operational efficiency. This role works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Mine Engineering, Laboratory, Process Control, and Technical Services to monitor key performance indicators, evaluate metallurgical performance, coordinate test work, troubleshoot processing issues, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

The Metallurgist applies technical expertise in crushing, grinding, flotation, filtration, and dewatering while ensuring safe, reliable, and cost-effective production. The role also supports laboratory operations, pilot plant testing, metallurgical accounting, and special projects that contribute to operational excellence.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor, analyze, and optimize metallurgical performance across crushing, grinding, flotation, filtration, and dewatering circuits.
  • Evaluate daily plant performance, metallurgical balances, recoveries, grades, throughput, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Maintain accurate metallurgical accounting, reporting, and production forecasts.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret metallurgical data to identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Troubleshoot metallurgical issues affecting plant performance and recommend corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and supervise metallurgical laboratory and plant test work to optimize operating conditions and resolve processing challenges.
  • Support lab programs, interpret test results, and assist with implementation of process improvements.
  • Assist with scheduling, planning, and execution of metallurgical test work and sampling programs.
  • Ensure reliable operation and validation of plant analytical equipment including automated samplers, particle size analyzers, and on-stream analyzers.
  • Conduct inspections of processing equipment during planned shutdowns and collaborate with Maintenance to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Work closely with Mine Engineering to understand ore characteristics, planned ore delivery, and anticipated impacts on processing performance.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for operations and management.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on increasing recovery, improving concentrate quality, reducing operating costs, and maximizing plant performance.
  • Support small to medium-sized metallurgical projects from planning through implementation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, consultants, contractors, and vendors on technical initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with all company safety policies, MSHA regulations, environmental requirements, and standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mineral Processing, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of metallurgical experience in mineral processing, concentrator operations, or base metal flotation.
  • Working knowledge of crushing, grinding, flotation, filtration, dewatering, and metallurgical accounting.
  • Experience analyzing metallurgical data and developing recommendations for process optimization.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.

Preferred

  • Experience with copper and/or molybdenum concentrator operations.
  • Experience with metallurgical laboratory testing and pilot plant operations.
  • Knowledge of process control systems and metallurgical instrumentation.
  • SAP experience.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and presentations.
  • Project management experience.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and process data evaluation.
  • Experience using metallurgical accounting and reporting software.
