Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, AI Foundations based in United States.
This is a high-impact engineering role focused on advancing the foundations of AI-powered application development.
You’ll design and build reliable systems for agentic coding, AI SDKs, and integrations across a growing ecosystem of frameworks and libraries.
The role combines deep software engineering fundamentals with hands-on exploration of emerging AI development patterns.
You’ll work in an action-oriented, open-source environment where technical quality, reliability, and developer experience are core priorities.
You’ll have end-to-end ownership of features while collaborating closely with engineers, field teams, customers, and the developer community.
Your work will help developers build and operate more reliable AI applications while accelerating adoption across the broader ecosystem.
This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of agentic development while applying rigorous computer science and systems principles.
- Design and build trusted agentic coding systems that use generative AI to produce high-quality, reliable software.
- Maintain and deepen expertise in agentic coding, emerging AI application architectures, and modern development techniques.
- Design and implement AI SDK capabilities supporting a broad range of frameworks, libraries, and AI application patterns.
- Take end-to-end ownership of new features, from technical design through implementation, testing, documentation, and delivery.
- Apply strong software engineering fundamentals to ensure code is well-designed, thoroughly tested, maintainable, and highly reliable.
- Work across multiple programming languages, including Python, TypeScript, Java, and Go, while continuing to learn and apply new technologies.
- Serve as a technical domain expert on AI design patterns, collaborating with field teams to develop best practices, reference implementations, and canonical examples.
- Engage directly with the developer community to troubleshoot complex issues, gather feedback, and improve APIs and developer experiences.
- Contribute to publicly available technical documentation explaining concepts, APIs, patterns, and best practices.
- Collaborate across teams to deliver reliable solutions that address customer needs and improve adoption.
- Contribute to open-source projects and third-party libraries, working transparently through public pull requests and technical discussions.
- Occasionally support customer or community issues requiring deep engineering expertise.
- Participate in periodic team travel and, where desired, represent the organization at developer conferences and technical events.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience building production-grade software.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrated experience and enthusiasm for generative AI, particularly AI agents, agentic workflows, and AI-assisted coding.
- A strong understanding of how to use AI to improve software quality, reliability, and engineering effectiveness—not simply development speed.
- Deep experience with concurrent programming and safe use of concurrency primitives such as mutexes and atomics.
- Fluency in multiple programming languages and demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for learning new languages and technologies.
- Experience designing APIs and producing documentation for publicly available libraries, modules, or developer-facing systems.
- A strong track record of open-source contributions, including work on third-party libraries or projects.
- Experience with distributed systems and a strong foundation in software architecture and systems design.
- Strong technical judgment and a thoughtful, opinionated approach to code and engineering practices without being dogmatic.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, primarily asynchronous environment with a high degree of autonomy.
- Nice-to-have experience includes building AI agents or AI applications, machine learning or ML systems, model training, large-scale distributed systems, or familiarity with durable execution and workflow-based programming models.
- A graduate degree in Computer Science is also advantageous.
- Estimated base salary range of $224,000–$302,400, depending on experience, expertise, location, and job level.
- Eligibility to participate in an equity plan.
- Fully remote work environment with flexibility to work from home.
- Unlimited paid time off, plus 12 holidays and 2 floating holidays.
- 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums for U.S. employees.
- AD&D, short-term and long-term disability, and life insurance, with standard and supplemental options.
- 401(k) plan through Empower.
- Learning and professional development support.
- Lifestyle spending benefits and professional membership support.
- Home office setup assistance and work-from-home meal benefits.
- Internet stipend and additional employee perks.
- International employees receive country-specific PTO and benefits, along with additional learning, lifestyle, home-office, professional membership, and wellness perks.
- Opportunities for periodic travel, including team offsites and other in-person gatherings designed to strengthen collaboration.
- An open-source, writing-oriented work environment with limited meetings and no 24/7 on-call requirement.
