Job Summary

The Industrial Canvas Sewer is responsible for sewing and assembling canvas and other heavy-duty fabric components used in marine applications, including pontoon covers, enclosures, and biminis. This role requires expertise in operating industrial sewing machines, attention to detail, and adherence to safety and quality standards. Proficiency in canvas/sewing computer programs to manage patterns, measurements, and fabric cutting is essential. The ideal candidate will bring experience in industrial sewing, an understanding of manufacturing processes, and a commitment to producing high-quality work that meets company specifications.

Essential Job Functions

  • Create, modify, and maintain production-ready patterns for all soft goods and sewn components
  • Translate engineering designs and concepts into buildable, repeatable patterns
  • Ensure patterns account for material behavior, tolerances, and real-world manufacturing constraints
  • Own version control and documentation of all patterns to prevent production errors
  • Build prototypes and first articles to validate design intent and manufacturability
  • Identify and resolve fit, alignment, and construction issues before release to production
  • Partner with engineering to refine designs for cost, quality, and ease of assembly
  • Support new model launches with validated patterns and documented build processes
  • Troubleshoot sewing and fitment issues on the production floor in real time
  • Identify root causes of defects and implement permanent corrective actions
  • Reduce rework by improving pattern accuracy, construction methods, and material usage
  • Act as the technical bridge between engineering and production teams
  • Establish and maintain standard work for sewing operations
  • Define best practices for material handling, stitching methods, and assembly sequence
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase first-pass yield and reduce defects
  • Support implementation of changes that improve throughput and product consistency
Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in operating industrial sewing machines and ability to work with heavy-duty fabrics
  • Solid understanding of machines and tools used in that station
  • Attention to detail
  • Good manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination
  • Be able to work independently and with urgency
  • Takes pride in their work and the work of their team
  • Committed to doing quality work and strives to improve everyday
  • Basic understanding of mathematics to be able to understand dimensions on a drawing
  • Basic computer skills for data entry into ERP system

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High School degree or equivalent; technical certification of vocational training in sewing of textiles is a plus
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in industrial or heavy-duty sewing, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with sewing or CAD software programs for pattern design and cutting is a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Must have enough manual dexterity and stability as required for precision work.
  • Must be able to see details at close range.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating sewing equipment and to occasionally lift and handle heavy rolls of fabric
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining focus on quality and safety
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to read work instructions and drawings.
  • Must be able to work at a fast pace.
  • Must be able to traverse facilities and machinery by lifting, walking, bending, twisting and carrying materials.
