The Organization:
Founded in 1846 to care for the children of sailors in the Port of New York, Seamen's Society for Children and Families ("Seamen’s Society”) was one of the first organizations in the US to care for abandoned children in family settings, rather than institutions. Today, Seamen's Society is a comprehensive $28 million nonprofit organization that offers foster care and adoption services, mental and behavioral health care services, prevention/family stabilization services, domestic violence intervention services, a health home care management program, education financial support, and a youth tutoring program. The agency's 200+ professionals serve over 1,250 children and over 500 families in New York City. Programs are conducted in a trauma-informed, caring manner that understands and embraces the diversity of the communities served by the organization.
Job Summary:
We are looking for a detail-oriented and proactive accounting professional to join our team. As a key member of our finance department, you will play a vital role in processing budgets, claims, and monthly reports to ensure accurate and timely financial operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Prepares program budget and modifications
· Remits programs fiscal claims monthly/quarterly for payment
· Monitors program expenditures to ascertain within budget parameters
· Responsible for intercompany balances with affiliates
· Prepares and transmits bank transfers, stop payments and ACH direct deposits, as well as bank reconciliations
· Monthly journal entries and shared cost allocation
· Prepares accounts analysis and assists with all audits
· Prepares Fiscal Board Reports and Financial Statements
· Assists with preparation of SSOP
· Performs other duties/responsibilities as assigned within scope of position
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
· Computer proficiency and knowledge of general ledger accounting software (Fund EZ, Sage, etc.)
· Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
· Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
· Excellent multitasking abilities with attention to detail and deadlines
· Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation
Requirements:Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required
· Grant administration experience related to claiming, budget mods, and journal entries required
· A minimum of 5 years of senior level accounting experience required; experience in nonprofit accounting with government funders (local, state, federal) preferred
· Due to the nature of the work environment work hours will be based on needs of program and may vary
