Job Description

East Lansing, Michigan | Full-Time, Temporary | $28–$30 per hour

ECE Subhub is seeking an experienced early childhood administrator to provide interim director coverage at a partner center in East Lansing. This is a temporary, full-time assignment of at least six weeks at a single site. The person in this role will carry day-to-day operational responsibility for the center for the duration of the placement.

About the Center

The center is a nonprofit early childhood program located on a university campus and has operated since 1971. It serves children from two weeks through six years of age across ten classrooms and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

The curriculum is play-based and child-centered. Teachers develop lesson plans around the interests of the children in their classrooms rather than following a scripted model. Staffing ratios exceed state minimums, including one adult for every three infants.

The center is governed by a board of directors comprising parents, staff, and professionals from the university and surrounding community.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day center operations, including staffing, scheduling, and classroom coverage across all ten classrooms
  • Maintain licensing compliance, including ratios, supervision, health and safety practices, and required recordkeeping
  • Keep accreditation and food program documentation current and in good order through the assignment
  • Support the teaching team, conduct check-ins, and address performance concerns as they arise
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families on questions, concerns, and program communication
  • Complete enrollment, attendance, incident, and program documentation accurately and on schedule
  • Designate a qualified staff member in charge whenever absent from the building
  • Communicate regularly with center leadership, the board as requested, and your ECE Subhub Regional Manager
Qualifications

Required

  • Prior experience as a director, assistant director, or site supervisor in a licensed early childhood program
  • Working knowledge of Michigan child care licensing requirements
  • Comfort overseeing an infant program, including care for newborns
  • Ability to enter an unfamiliar center and understand its operations quickly without disrupting them

Director-level placements with ECE Subhub require a bachelor's degree at minimum. Candidates must meet one of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in early childhood education or child development
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a child-related field: elementary education, child counseling, child guidance, child psychology, family studies, social work, or special education
  • Bachelor's degree in another field, with a valid Child Development Associate credential and 480 hours of documented experience working with children

These standards meet or exceed Michigan's licensing requirements for this assignment.

Preferred

  • Qualification as an early childhood program director under Michigan licensing rules
  • Experience maintaining NAEYC accreditation
  • Experience working with a nonprofit board of directors
Additional Requirements
  • CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification
  • Ability to clear a Michigan child background check and fingerprinting
  • Reliable transportation and availability to work on site in East Lansing for the full assignment
Physical Requirements

This position requires active participation in a licensed classroom environment. Candidates should be able to observe and respond to children's needs across classrooms, playground, and common areas; lift 30 pounds from the floor to a waist-high surface ten to fifteen times daily; reach a child 20 to 30 feet away within three seconds; and move between floor level and standing position throughout the day.

Compensation and Support

Placement is $28 to $30 per hour, determined by credentials and experience, with consistent full-time hours at a single site for the length of the assignment.

ECE Subhub manages onboarding in full, including fingerprinting, MiRegistry health and safety training, and CPR and First Aid scheduling. All employees complete our orientation program and receive 16 hours of paid professional development annually. Each employee is assigned a Regional Manager who serves as their direct point of contact throughout the placement.

Candidates who perform well in interim assignments are frequently considered for additional placements with ECE Subhub.
