POSITION SUMMARY:
As a Server at The Gables, you are first and foremost a host of the property. You create connection through conversation, thoughtful recommendations, and genuine interest while providing polished, accurate, and efficient food and beverage service.
This flexible role is scheduled primarily on weekends, during events, and when additional guest-facing support is needed. Strong service fundamentals matter, but so does the ability to read the room, make hotel guests, neighbors, and event attendees feel at home, and represent The Gables and Raleigh as a knowledgeable community ambassador.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE:
A Successful Server:
• Creates a warm, personal guest experience while maintaining accurate, efficient, well-paced service.
• Knows the Alcove menu, The Gables, and Raleigh well enough to make confident food, beverage, and local recommendations.
• Reads the room, anticipates needs, and communicates clearly with the kitchen, bar, runners, and management during busy service and events.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Food and Beverage Preparation and Service
• Prepare assigned service areas for opening or events, including tables, menus, serviceware, water, and stations.
• Take orders accurately, enter them promptly in the POS, and clearly communicate allergies, modifications, special requests, and timing needs.
• Serve food and beverages with care, maintain appropriate pacing and table awareness, and support running, clearing, resetting, stocking, and light plating as needed.
Guest Service and Menu Knowledge
• Maintain strong knowledge of the Alcove menu, including key ingredients, allergens, preparation methods, and service details.
• Welcome hotel guests, neighbors, and event attendees as a host of The Gables, building rapport naturally while staying attentive to service.
• Learn preferences when possible and make thoughtful recommendations across food, beverage, The Gables experience, and Raleigh dining, arts, culture, shopping, and activities.
Cash Handling, Inventory and Product Management
• Accurately enter orders, manage guest checks, process payments, and follow established check-closing, discount, cash-handling, and gratuity procedures.
• Keep service stations organized and stocked with menus, serviceware, glassware, silverware, napkins, and other operating supplies.
• Monitor service and product levels and communicate shortages or unusual usage before they affect guests or service flow.
Cleanliness, Equipment, Health, and Safety
• Maintain clean, organized, guest-ready tables, dining areas, service stations, and support spaces throughout service.
• Properly handle and polish serviceware, support dish flow when needed, and promptly address spills, hazards, equipment issues, or maintenance concerns.
• Follow all food handling, sanitation, health, safety, North Carolina ABC, and responsible alcohol service requirements.
Communication, Teamwork, and Property Support
• Communicate openly with guests, kitchen, runners, bar, and management about timing, requests, preferences, service flow, and anything affecting the guest experience.
• Support Baristas, Bartenders, Food Runners, and Kitchen Hosts with running, clearing, resetting, stocking, and other service needs based on volume.
• Assist with private events, catering, and community gatherings through setup, guest engagement, service, breakdown, and resetting the space; remain flexible for weekend and event-based scheduling.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Must be 18 years of age.
Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Must meet all applicable legal requirements for serving alcoholic beverages in North Carolina.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience & Skills
• Previous serving, hospitality, hotel, catering, event, or guest-facing experience preferred; natural warmth and strong people skills are essential.
• Ability to balance guest engagement with accurate order taking, POS entry, pacing, follow-through, and multiple simultaneous needs.
• Strong menu-learning skills and curiosity about food, beverage, The Gables, and Raleigh, with the ability to make recommendations conversationally.
• Ability to read different personalities, build rapport naturally, and remain calm, polished, and efficient during busy service.
• Working knowledge of food handling, sanitation, responsible alcohol service, and safe service practices, or willingness to learn.
• Dependable attendance and flexibility to work primarily weekends plus evenings, holidays, private events, and other shifts as needed; high-volume, hotel, wine, cocktail, coffee, or event experience is a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to be on your feet and alert for extended periods and lift and carry up to 45 lbs. as needed.
• Ability to safely carry and balance trays, plates, glassware, cases, and multiple service items.
• Continuous use of hands and arms, bending, reaching, lifting, twisting, walking, and repetitive motions associated with service.
• Maintains a polished, professional appearance consistent with The Gables’ hospitality standards.
If you can make a stranger feel at home, keep service moving, and share a great Raleigh recommendation, we'd love to meet you.
