About This Position

Our client is seeking a full-time Automation Controls Engineer. The company is a VC-backed startup that makes large, electrical, thermally, conductive flexible circuits. They are a fast-growing team of skilled engineers and manufacturing experts who are fundamentally redefining the way printed circuits are made. They perform research, development and manufacturing in the San Francisco Bay Area.

They are seeking an ambitious, hands-on engineer to join their team and drive the development of their innovative flex circuit manufacturing technology.

  • Bottom-to-top automation controls design and implementation for new equipment and improvement of automated manufacturing equipment
  • Electrical and controls design of material handling, process control, inspection and data collection
  • Selection and implementation of servo, actuator and robotics control
  • Experience selecting and integrating machine vision systems
  • Selection and use of sensors such as thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors, pressure sensors, location/distance/presence sensors, rotary encoders
  • Management of electrical cabinet design, assembly, testing and qualification
  • PLC programming and control system design
  • HMI and SCADA design and implementation
  • Scripting for batch computation off of PLC
  • Design and implementation of automated roll-to-roll control systems
  • Vendor and fabricator selection and management
  • Working hands on with roll-to-roll web handling and processing equipment, including drives, edge guides, brakes, and steering mechanisms
  • Working closely with Process Engineers, Technicians and Operators to meet equipment requirements and make improvements to existing systems
  • Supporting plant expansion efforts, including manufacturing data collection and management
  • 1st line of defense for engineering-level troubleshooting of faulty devices, including finding the root cause of failures and designing fixes

Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or similar field
  • 3+ years of hands on experience in Automation Controls Engineering or similar field
  • Ability to safely and confidently operate and troubleshoot complex equipment
  • Independent problem solver with a desire to learn new skills and develop new technology
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented mind set
  • Able to adapt to changing requirements in a fast-paced start-up setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong work ethic, and ability to work in a collaborative team environment

Desired:

  • Intimate background in automation controls of complex systems using PLC programming (e.g. Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Siemens, etc.)
  • Design of automation control systems for manufacturing equipment
  • Design of roll-to-roll controls
  • Design of motion-control systems using motors, gears, transmissions, drive belts, actuators and sensors
  • Experience with collecting, organizing and storing process control data in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of electrical and controls design best practices and manufacturing safety standards
  • Proficient at creating electrical schematics
