Job Description

Position Summary

The Activities Driver is responsible for safely transporting individuals with developmental disabilities to and from program activities, community outings, medical appointments, and other approved destinations. This role supports program staff in promoting community integration and engagement while ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of participants during transportation and activities.

The Activities Driver also assists with supervising participants during outings and may provide support to program staff to ensure a positive and inclusive environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely transport program participants to and from scheduled activities, appointments, and community outings.
  • Operate organization vehicles in compliance with all traffic laws and agency transportation policies.
  • Conduct daily vehicle safety inspections (fuel, tires, lights, wheelchair lifts, etc.).
  • Assist participants with boarding and exiting vehicles, including the use of lifts, ramps, and securement systems when necessary.
  • Ensure all passengers are properly secured using seatbelts or wheelchair restraints.
  • Maintain accurate transportation logs and mileage records.
  • Communicate any incidents, delays, or concerns to the Program Manager or supervisor immediately.
  • Assist staff in supervising participants during community outings or activities.
  • Support participants in engaging in recreational, social, and community activities.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of program vehicles.
  • Follow all agency policies related to participant safety, confidentiality, and abuse prevention.
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and safety courses as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of driving experience preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities preferred.
  • Valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) record check.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).

  • Ability to interact respectfully and patiently with individuals with disabilities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow schedules while adapting to changes when needed.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when assisting participants or equipment.
  • Ability to assist individuals with mobility needs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate wheelchair lifts and secure mobility devices.

Working Conditions

  • Work may include indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Frequent community travel and transportation duties.
  • Schedule flexibility is required and may include early mornings, afternoons, and weekends to meet programming needs.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
  • Previous experience in recreational programming, activities coordination, or a similar role preferred.
