Job Description
The Server Engineer (Nutanix) is critical in maintaining and troubleshooting Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) that supports clinical, biomedical, and healthcare OT systems, including those used in patient monitoring, imaging, and laboratory environments. This role brings expertise in virtualization and server infrastructure, with a strong focus on maintaining uptime, supporting clinical workflows, and complying with healthcare-specific regulatory standards such as HIPAA, HITECH, and FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
Responsibilities:
- Position is Los Angeles based, reports to a Healthcare IT Infrastructure Manager
- Works from home (remote) part-time. The remainder of the time will be spent onsite at a medical center in Carson, California.
- Design, deploy, and manage Nutanix HCI systems (Prism Central/Element, AHV, AOS) supporting OT and clinical applications in healthcare settings.
- Provide Tier 2/3 support for Nutanix-powered servers running critical OT systems like PACS, LIS, RIS, EHR-connected imaging systems, and biomedical data gateways.
- Collaborate with biomedical engineering and clinical IT to support systems used in patient care, such as patient monitoring servers, lab analyzers, and imaging modalities.
- Implement and manage highly available, fault-tolerant server solutions to minimize downtime in environments with direct impact on patient care.
- Work within segmented networks to isolate OT systems, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity best practices in healthcare (e.g., NIST 800-53, NIST 800-66, IEC 80001).
- Perform proactive health monitoring, capacity planning, patching, and vulnerability remediation.
- Support documentation and audit requirements for HIPAA, Joint Commission (TJC), and other regulatory bodies.
- Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing for healthcare OT systems.
- Maintain system documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and change logs.
- Assist in incident response and root cause analysis for OT/IT server outages in clinical environments.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Healthcare IT, or a related field – or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience with Nutanix HCI platforms (AHV, AOS, Prism).
- 2+ years supporting OT systems within a hospital, clinical, or laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with clinical and biomedical systems, such as PACS, EHR integrations, HL7, DICOM, and middleware.
- Understanding of HIPAA security/privacy requirements and IT compliance in healthcare.
- Experience working with systems that operate in air-gapped or semi-isolated OT environments.
Preferred qualifications:
- Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP) or higher.
- Knowledge of FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliance for systems that manage electronic records.
- Experience with healthcare IT systems like Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or other EHR platforms.
- Familiarity with Veeam or other healthcare-compatible backup and DR solutions.
- Understanding of medical device lifecycle management and connectivity.
- Experience with cybersecurity controls in healthcare OT networks (e.g., zero trust architecture, NAC, endpoint protection).
This hybrid role is primarily remote (work from home) but will require onsite presence, especially during implementation. Initially, expect to be onsite one day per week, with the possibility of increasing to three to five days per week as project demands arise.
