About This Position

Summary of Duties: To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled gardening and turf maintenance duties in the development, maintenance, and repair of urban forests, landscaped and developed areas, parks, playgrounds, and public facilities; to operate a variety of park maintenance equipment; and to participate in the beautification of parks, playgrounds, urban forests and public facilities, and landscape maintenance districts.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey class in the Park Maintenance series. All positions assigned to the class require the ability to work independently and as an effective crewmember, exercising judgment and initiative.

Supervision Received and Exercised: Receives general supervision from the Parks, Grounds, Forestry Operations Manager. Functional supervision is provided by a Park Maintenance Crew Supervisor. Experienced members of the class may be required to provide training and technical supervision of less experienced park maintenance personnel.


  1. Maintains plantings and grounds, recreation areas, and irrigation systems
  2. Waters, weeds, trims, renovates, and fertilizes, shrubs, trees, and flower beds and performs limited mowing of lawns
  3. Rakes leaves and cleans walks, fields, courts, and other facilities
  4. Loads trimming on trucks
  5. Cultivates ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, snail, and slug bits
  6. Plants and maintains trees, flowers, and shrubs
  7. Picks up rubbish and paper and performs general grounds cleaning
  8. Maintains and prepares athletic fields
  9. Performs installation and maintenance of irrigation equipment
  10. Operates small power mowers, edgers, sprayers, and other equipment
  11. Uses a variety of hand tools and power tools
  12. Drives vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment as required
  13. Assists in moving and installing park and recreation equipment such as bleachers, backstops, and playground equipment
  14. Performs custodial duties in park bathrooms and other park facilities
  15. Assists and trains less experienced personnel
  16. Responds to inquiries from the general public
  17. Performs building maintenance duties such as general painting, carpentry, plumbing, and other tasks
  18. Repairs fences, tree stakes, playground equipment, and other parks facilities
  19. Prepares ground for concrete or asphalt work and assists with this work
  20. Controls weeds
  21. Performs related duties as assigned

Knowledge of:
  • Correct and effective use of landscape maintenance tools, equipment and materials
  • Safe work practices in the use and maintenance of power mowers and other powerized and cutting equipment
  • Proper pruning, irrigating, fertilizing, and spraying methods for plants, turf, and trees
  • Plant and turf pests and diseases, and methods for their control and eradication
  • General construction and repair methods, including carpentry, plumbing, painting and masonry work
  • Mechanics of irrigation systems
  • Performing skilled park maintenance work
  • Operating a variety of light and heavy equipment, including lawn mowers
  • Performing a variety of building maintenance tasks including general carpentry, plumbing and masonry
  • Competently caring for plants, shrubs, turf and trees
  • Properly irrigating, fertilizing and spraying a variety of plants and trees
  • Reading and interpreting landscape plans and diagrams
  • Preparing, pouring and finishing concrete and asphalt
  • Preparing and maintaining neat and accurate records
  • Working independently and effectively as a crewmember
  • Training less experienced personnel
Ability to:
  • Prepare and apply herbicides and pesticides for effective results
  • Operate and make minor repairs to vehicles, equipment, and tools
  • Perform general carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and grounds work
Education: High school diploma/GED
Experience: Two years of skilled grounds maintenance, landscaping, or construction experience.

Licenses and Certifications: A valid State of California Driver’s License appropriate to vehicles operated. May require possession of a California Pesticide Applicator Certificate.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines and related equipment; vision sufficient to read fine printed materials on labels, Material Safety Data Sheets, manuals, maps, diagrams, to work with color-coded wires with no color deficiencies; hearing sufficient to conduct in person, radio and telephone conversations occasionally over the noise of operating equipment; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in a normal conversational distance, on the telephone and in addressing groups; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about uneven terrain of a park or un-landscaped terrain; physical strength to lift from the floor up to 50 lbs. and up to 80 lbs. with assistance; physical stamina sufficient to sit or walk for prolonged periods of time and persevere long periods of exposure to pollen and grass - no severe allergic reactions to dust or pollen; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.

Perform heavy manual labor for periods up to but not limited to 8 hours per day. Work outdoors under adverse conditions in heat, wind, cold and rain. Work in and around potentially hazardous substances, including pesticides, herbicides and motor fuel. Ability to drive a vehicle and power mower with a manual clutch.


Employee must complete SB 1343 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training within six months of appointment and every two years thereafter.
