Public Communication Specialist II - Colorado Springs Airport

The City of Colorado Springs is ready to welcome a Public Communication Specialist II to the Marketing & Communication team at the Colorado Springs Airport. As a Public Communication Specialist II, you will develop original content—written, photographic, and video—that highlights the people, places, and progress of COS. You’ll craft strategic messaging, develop digital campaigns, and use your voice and visuals to build community, inform travelers, and elevate the Airport’s presence regionally and nationally.

Job Type: Full-time; Exempt

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM; Schedule may vary due to event and/or airport operational needs
Annual Salary: $66,041.92 - $79,282.02

As a Public Communication Specialist II, you will:

  • Develop original, engaging content that tells the story of the Airport—highlighting staff, passengers, services, events, and milestones
  • Craft a variety of written materials including feature articles, Q&As, blogs, newsletters, press releases, and web content
  • Produce visual content such as photography, video, reels, and live streams to enhance narrative impact
  • Interview internal and external stakeholders to humanize COS and build connection through authentic storytelling
  • Maintain a digital archive of multimedia assets and ensure all content reflects brand consistency and quality
  • Oversee daily management of COS social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube)
  • Create and execute a strategic social media calendar
  • Monitor online interactions, respond to comments and inquiries with accurate, timely information, and manage online reputation
  • Analyze content performance using insights and platform analytics to optimize future posts and campaigns
  • Support the development and implementation of integrated marketing and public outreach campaigns, including those for air service and airport initiatives
  • Design and publish a monthly Airport newsletter and support production of creative and written content for marketing initiatives
  • Support the coordination of media placements and paid advertising efforts to ensure message reach and brand alignment
  • Plan and support communications around Airport-hosted and community events, including milestone announcements and media opportunities
  • Attend events to gather content, conduct interviews, and share real-time updates through social channels
  • Represent the Airport at public meetings, community outreach events, and City-related forums
  • Coordinate logistics and publicity for special events, working with vendors and stakeholders to ensure a seamless experience
  • Serve as a designated Public Information Officer (PIO) for COS
  • Provide after-hours and emergency on-call communications support as needed
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with the public during critical situations, helping manage information flow and media response

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:

  • In which demonstrated proficiency with modern office technology, especially Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro
  • In which demonstrated experience with video editing tools (e.g., Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere) and photo retouching
  • Public relations best practices, crisis communications, and community engagement strategies
  • Current social media trends, platform algorithms, and audience engagement techniques

Ability to:

  • Provide excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and make recommendations
  • Excel in a fast-paced environment
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing to various levels of stakeholders
  • Prioritize, organize, and manage multiple projects from a variety of different departments
  • Evaluate and resolve complex issues

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in communications, digital content creation, storytelling, or public engagement.

  • Two (2) or more years managing multi-platform social media accounts for an organization, public agency, or business.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in storytelling across various formats, including video, photography, social media, and written content.
  • Experience using social media management tools such as Hootsuite or Sprout Social.
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms and scheduling tools.
  • Experience working with or within public-sector environments, media, or creative agencies.
