About This Position

Distinguishing Features of the Class: Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class is responsible for technical work involving the operation of ultrasound equipment for the purpose of taking ultrasound scans of various designated portions of the body to assist physicians in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities in both adults and children. Work involves performing diagnostic procedures, proper positioning of the patient, maintenance and adjustment of ultrasound equipment, and maintenance of ultrasound files. This level is distinguished from the Ultrasonography Technologist in that this is the full performance level with incumbents performing a full range of ultrasound procedures independently. Supervision is not a regular responsibility of this class; however, incumbents may act as lead workers over Ultrasonography Technologists, non-professional and clerical support staff in the way of quality control of work, and providing technical assistance. Does related work as required.

Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only)

Performs diagnostic procedures by producing and assessing ultrasound images and related data that are used by physicians to render medical diagnoses;

Operates sonographic and peripheral equipment as prescribed or requisitioned to scan designated portions of the body including abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology, opthalmology, cardiovascular or vascular areas for diagnostic purposes;

Obtains, reviews and compiles pertinent patient history, physical examinations and supporting clinical data to facilitate diagnostic results;

Positions and instructs patients in preparation for taking ultrasound scans;

Makes adjustments to ultrasound equipment to correct setting for each examination as prescribed by the attending physician;

Manages images and ultrasound examinations in the Radiology PACS system;

Prepares and maintains records and files of patients;

Purges outdated files, as directed;

Troubleshoots and maintains ultrasound equipment;

Requisitions supplies as needed;

Provides training and technical direction to lower level technicians and non-professional support staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes: Thorough knowledge of the techniques of ultrasonography; thorough knowledge of ultrasound and related equipment; good knowledge of human anatomy; skill in the operation and minor repair of ultrasound equipment; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to direct and instruct others; ability to handle sick and injured patients properly; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; thoroughness; reliability; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the requirements of the position.

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience: Possession of certification and registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as either a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Sonography (primary or post-primary), Vascular Sonography, or Breast Sonography; and two years of experience (pre- or post-certification) in a hospital radiology department or private radiological service, where the primary function was performing diagnostic work using ultrasound equipment.
