About the Engagement

Wellness Equity Alliance (WEA) is seeking an experienced, responsive, and detail-oriented independent Web Developer & Website Manager to support the development, maintenance, optimization, and ongoing management of WEA and affiliated websites.

This part-time, 1099 independent contractor engagement is ideal for a web professional who is skilled in modern website design and optimization, experienced in content management, and able to translate organizational communications and projects into impactful digital experiences.

The contractor will collaborate with WEA's marketing, communications, design, and technology partners to deliver high-quality websites that are accessible, responsive, easy to navigate, search-optimized, and aligned with WEA's evolving programs and initiatives.

WEA's primary web environment is Squarespace. The contractor should be comfortable working with, and creatively around, the platform's capabilities and limitations to deliver the best possible user experience.

Scope of Services

Website Development & Maintenance

• Develop, update, support, and maintain WEA and affiliated websites within Squarespace.
• Build and modify webpages, landing pages, resource libraries, news and blog sections, program pages, and other digital content.
• Create and maintain organized content structures for resources, news, blogs, internal information, and other evolving website needs.
• Implement custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, where appropriate and feasible, to extend Squarespace functionality.
• Troubleshoot broken links, layout issues, forms, integrations, navigation, and other website functionality.
• Ensure websites function and display properly across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
• Identify practical solutions and workarounds when Squarespace's native functionality does not fully meet project requirements.
• Support the implementation and maintenance of third-party tools, forms, embeds, and integrations.

User Experience & Design Optimization

• Recommend and implement improvements to website usability, navigation, information architecture, and overall user experience.
• Apply responsive web design principles to ensure a consistent experience across screen sizes and devices.
• Partner with WEA's marketing and design teams to translate brand and visual direction into effective web experiences.
• Assist with graphics, web-based content, and other digital initiatives as needed.
• Maintain consistency across WEA's digital properties while supporting the unique needs of individual programs and initiatives.

SEO, AEO & Digital Discoverability

• Implement SEO best practices, including page titles, metadata, URLs, image optimization, internal linking, and content structure.
• Support Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and emerging practices that improve the discoverability of WEA content across traditional search engines and AI-powered search and answer platforms.
• Review and maintain meta tags, canonical settings, indexing directives, redirects, and XML sitemap configurations within Squarespace's capabilities.
• Implement structured data/schema markup, including schema.org and JSON-LD, where appropriate and beneficial.
• Align website implementation with accessibility, search visibility, content discoverability, and user experience goals.

Analytics & Performance

• Monitor website performance and traffic using tools such as Google Analytics, Google Search Console, Squarespace Analytics, and other relevant platforms.
• Identify performance, usability, or discoverability issues and recommend practical improvements.
• Help establish and monitor meaningful website performance metrics.
• Optimize page structure, media, and other site elements to improve page speed and overall performance within Squarespace.
• Provide recommendations based on website traffic, search performance, and user behavior data.

Accessibility, Privacy & Website Standards

• Support WEA's adherence to current web accessibility best practices, including heading structure, alt text, color contrast, keyboard usability, and other WCAG-informed practices.
• Help maintain appropriate privacy, cookie, form, and tracking configurations in coordination with WEA stakeholders.
• Follow sound website security practices, including appropriate management of administrator access, permissions, integrations, and platform settings.
• Coordinate with Squarespace or other technology vendors when platform-level technical support is required.

Email & Digital Communications Support

• Support the development and production of email newsletters and digital campaigns as needed.
• Assist with website-to-email integrations, subscription forms, audience capture, and related digital communication tools.
• Help ensure website and email experiences are visually and functionally aligned.

Collaboration & Project Support

• Collaborate with marketing, communications, design, IT, leadership, and program teams to execute website updates and digital initiatives.
• Translate stakeholder requests into practical web solutions and advise when alternative approaches would improve usability, maintainability, or performance.
• Provide guidance on website tools, content management processes, and digital best practices.
• Manage multiple web requests and projects, clearly communicating timelines, dependencies, questions, and potential challenges.
• Independently manage workflow and priorities to meet mutually agreed-upon deliverables and deadlines.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience developing, maintaining, and optimizing professional websites.
• Strong hands-on Squarespace experience, including page development, content management, styling, responsive design, platform settings, and third-party integrations.
• Understanding of Squarespace's customization capabilities and limitations, with the ability to identify effective solutions and workarounds.
• Working knowledge of HTML and CSS, with familiarity with JavaScript for customization and troubleshooting.
• Solid understanding of responsive web design and optimization for desktop, tablet, and mobile.
• Working knowledge of SEO fundamentals and modern website discoverability best practices.
• Understanding of website structure, navigation, information architecture, usability, and general web design principles.
• Familiarity with web analytics platforms and the ability to interpret traffic and user behavior data.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail and commitment to accurate, polished work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing or managing websites across multiple content management systems in addition to Squarespace.
• Experience with Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
• Familiarity with structured data/schema markup and JSON-LD.
• Understanding of accessibility standards and WCAG best practices.
• Familiarity with AEO, AI search discoverability, and evolving search optimization practices.
• Experience with email marketing platforms and newsletter production.
• Familiarity with graphic design or digital design tools.
• Experience supporting nonprofit, healthcare, community-based, government, or mission-driven organizations.
• Familiarity with public health, health equity, or community health is a plus but not required.

Ideal Contractor Profile

The ideal contractor is proactive, dependable, collaborative, and comfortable taking ownership of web projects from request through implementation. They balance technical considerations with design, communications, and organizational needs, and can explain web recommendations clearly to colleagues with varying levels of technical expertise.

WEA is particularly interested in a contractor who will serve not only as a website implementer but as a thoughtful digital partner, identifying opportunities to improve the usability, accessibility, discoverability, and overall effectiveness of WEA's web presence.

Engagement Details
