Job Description
It’s a great time to join COMC – Millions of Cards. Endless Joy.
Our industry is thriving, and COMC is investing in the technology, infrastructure, and customer experiences that will power our next stage of growth. We’re building a team passionate about making collecting easier, more engaging, and more enjoyable while expanding the reach and capabilities of our marketplace.
Reports To: Director, Engineering
Travel Required: No
Summary
The Site Reliability Engineer is responsible for keeping COMC’s marketplace fast, available, and secure for the collectors and consigners who depend on it every day. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and operations, owning the reliability, scalability, and observability of the production systems that power our website, consignment workflows, order processing, and warehouse operations. The Site Reliability Engineer partners closely with software engineering, product, and operations teams to define service-level objectives, automate infrastructure, lead incident response, and build the tooling and practices that allow COMC to grow with confidence.
About You
You care deeply about uptime, but you care even more about eliminating the toil and fragility that put it at risk. You are equally comfortable writing code, tuning a database, and calmly running an incident bridge at 2 a.m. You think in systems, measure before you change things, and leave every process a little more automated and better documented than you found it. You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues, and you take pride in building infrastructure that other engineers trust and enjoy working with.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Own the availability, latency, performance, and capacity of COMC’s production systems, including customer-facing web applications, APIs, databases, and internal operations platforms, and write production-quality code to improve them.
- Define, implement, and report on service-level indicators (SLIs), service-level objectives (SLOs), and error budgets in partnership with engineering and product leadership.
- Design, build, and maintain cloud and platform infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code practices, ensuring environments are consistent, repeatable, secure, and easy for engineers to self-serve.
- Lead the modernization of legacy systems by migrating workloads from Azure-hosted infrastructure (VMs, App Service, and legacy deployment pipelines) to modern platforms such as Vercel and Render, planning phased cutovers with zero-downtime deployments, rollback paths, and clear success criteria.
- Refactor and re-architect legacy applications and services (including .NET and Windows-hosted workloads) into containerized, stateless, twelve-factor services that run cleanly on managed platforms, with preview environments, environment-based configuration, and automated deploys on every merge.
- Contribute directly to the codebase by building features, APIs, internal tools, and shared libraries alongside software engineering, participating in code reviews, and raising the bar on testing, code quality, and maintainability.
- Build and improve CI/CD pipelines that enable fast, safe, and frequent deployments, including automated testing, preview deployments, progressive rollouts, and reliable rollback, and migrate legacy Azure DevOps pipelines to modern Git-based workflows such as GitHub Actions.
- Develop and maintain monitoring, logging, tracing, and alerting systems that provide clear visibility into system health and reduce alert noise.
- Participate in and help lead the on-call rotation; respond to and resolve production incidents, coordinate communication during outages, and drive timely recovery.
- Lead blameless post-incident reviews, identify root causes, and track corrective actions through to completion.
- Identify and eliminate operational toil by writing automation, services, and self-service tooling in languages such as Python, Go, C#, or TypeScript, treating internal tools as real software with tests, versioning, and documentation.
- Conduct capacity planning and performance testing to prepare for growth and high-traffic events such as major product releases and promotional sales.
- Partner with engineering teams on system design, code, and architecture reviews to build reliability, scalability, and observability into new services from the start, and to guide decisions on database, caching, and hosting strategy during platform migrations.
- Maintain and test backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans for critical systems and data.
- Collaborate on security and compliance practices, including patch management, access controls, secrets management, and vulnerability remediation.
- Manage cloud and platform costs and resource utilization, comparing legacy Azure spend against Vercel, Render, and similar platforms, and recommending optimizations that balance performance, developer velocity, and efficiency.
- Create and maintain clear runbooks, architecture documentation, and operational standards.
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), plus experience with modern application platforms such as Vercel, Render, Fly.io, or Heroku.
- Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, or CloudFormation.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Go, C#, or TypeScript/Node.js, with experience writing, testing, reviewing, and shipping production application code, in addition to scripting in Bash.
- Experience migrating or modernizing legacy applications and infrastructure, such as moving workloads from Azure or on-premises environments to managed platforms like Vercel or Render, including data migration, DNS and CDN cutover, and minimizing downtime.
- Solid working knowledge of Linux and/or Windows server administration, networking fundamentals (DNS, TCP/IP, load balancing, CDNs), and web application architecture.
- Experience operating and tuning relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL) in production environments.
- Hands-on experience with observability tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, New Relic, or the ELK stack.
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or GitLab CI.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex, distributed systems under pressure and communicate clearly during incidents.
- Strong understanding of security best practices for cloud infrastructure and production systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document systems clearly and collaborate across teams.
- Ownership mindset, sound judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Education & Experience
- 5+ years of experience in site reliability engineering, DevOps, infrastructure engineering, or a related software engineering role.
- 3+ years of experience supporting high-availability, customer-facing production systems, preferably in e-commerce or marketplace environments.
- Experience participating in an on-call rotation and leading incident response.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, Certified Kubernetes Administrator) are a plus.
