Job Function:

This position is responsible for planning, supervision, and participating in the building and grounds maintenance and operation functions of a facility and/or buildings at Monroe Community College's Public Safety Training Facility. Responsibilities involve planning and implementing the day-to-day maintenance and operations activities, as well as long-term maintenance, repair, and enhancement initiatives of classroom/office buildings, exterior grounds, propane-fired training props, and propane distribution systems, supervising and maintaining the grounds and outdoor bullet trap at the Rush Range facility. General supervision is exercised over a senior-level mechanical staff, a fire equipment technician, and two full-time cleaning staff. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the Dean of Public Safety Programs.

PROVISIONAL - Successful candidate must be eligible to take the Civil Service exam, Supervisor of Building Maintenance-MCC-PSTF, when scheduled, and be reachable.

Primary Functions

  • Plans and assigns day-to-day activities of the maintenance staff.
  • Supervises contractors performing construction and maintenance work on the facilities, buildings, and grounds.
  • Communicates with building occupants regarding maintenance of the facilities, buildings, and grounds.
  • Responds to and resolves situations needing urgent assessment, repair, or maintenance to the building or its systems.
  • Plans long-term maintenance, repair, and enhancement or construction projects.
  • Researches and recommends purchases of maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Schedules and/or conducts tests of fire alarm, sprinkler, emergency generator, elevator, and other building systems.
  • Directs the proper operation and maintenance of operating systems and physical plant fixtures such as Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC), water, sewer, fire alarm and security system, electrical, mechanical, structural, housekeeping, elevator, fire suppression, parking lots, landscaping, and auxiliary power.
  • Supervises two part-time grounds workers at the main facility and the Rush Range.
  • Supervises two full-time cleaners/staff.
  • Ensures that the grounds are maintained in proper condition.
  • Prepares cost estimates for maintenance, repair, or facility enhancement or construction projects.
  • Ensures vehicles assigned to the function are properly maintained.
  • Performs maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Manages preventative maintenance on live burn training simulators.
  • Keeps logs and records of maintenance activities.
  • Maintains vehicles assigned to the facilities department.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must currently hold the Monroe County Supervisor of Building Maintenance title or meet the minimum qualifications below for a provisional appointment:

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER?

  • (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree plus (5) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in construction,
    OR in building or facilities maintenance,
    OR as an electrician, HVAC technician, mechanical engineer, or plumber, three (3) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • (B) Seven (7) years of experience as defined above, three (3) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, OR
  • (C) Any equivalent combination of training and education as defined by the limits as outlined in the two bullets above.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must demonstrate strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain and supervise live round bullet trap safety.
  • Must be organized and proactive with the ability to efficiently plan, organize, and coordinate a variety of activities.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.
  • Knowledge of MCC purchasing procedures.
  • Ability to design/build training props for Fire/Police/EMS disciplines.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently


Additional Information:

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Hours: Determined by the department

Salary: Starting annual salary of $74,403.35.

Pay Transparency Disclaimer: The posted salary range represents the full salary scale for this position, which includes all pay steps within the range. The starting salary for all new hires is typically at the entry-level figure, as determined by the step placement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Progression through the range occurs over time based on established criteria such as length of service and performance. This range is provided to give applicants an understanding of the potential earnings over the course of a career in this role.
