Job Description

Through the Looking Glass (TLG) is looking for an Infant/Toddler Teacher committed to quality care year around for its small Early Head Start Program in Alameda County. TLG is a Berkeley-based and internationally recognized program serving children and families with disabilities.

Title: Early Head Start Infant/Toddler Teacher

Program: TLG Early Head Start Center-Based Program

Reports To: EHS Education Manager/Center Co-Director

Training Opportunity

Through the Looking Glass’ Early Head Start program offers frequent training opportunities. TLG has trained more than 225,000 professionals in the U.S. and internationally regarding child development, infant/parent relationships, children and families with disabilities, etc.; many of its staff provide training or consultation.

Summary:

  • Provides quality primary care giving for infants or toddlers in a safe and supervised early care and education setting.
  • Promotes the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Early Head Start children enrolled in the program.
  • Develops individual goals for children.
  • Provides screenings and on-going assessment.
  • Follows Head Start Program Performance Standards, agency policies, procedures and other applicable Federal and State regulations to meet the TLG Early Head Start Program goals and objectives.

Responsibilities of this position will include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Supervise and monitor children at all times.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings to plan for and deliver collaborative services.
  • Work in a cooperative, respectful and constructive way with co-teachers, other center staff, and parents, in order to maintain an environment that supports the socio-emotional development of children.
  • Develop and use lesson plans and promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development and individualized goals of infants and toddlers in classroom activities.
  • Enter child development information into Child Plus DRDP data system.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to support high quality learning environments in a center focused on children's individual needs.
  • Monitor and report child abuse or neglect.
  • Assure accurate and point of service meal counts.
  • Support development of healthy eating habits for children and families through modeling, education, and encouragement. Assist in preparing and serving food to children, in compliance with CACFP regulations.
  • Other duties as requested.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, an employee is regularly required to speak and understand English, in person, by telephone, and in writing. An employee also is regularly required to reach and interact with children who are on the floor (or ground of outdoor play area) and lift objects or children up to 50 pounds. Employee must have the ability to supervise a group of children visually at all times, as well as to quickly reach them when necessary to ensure their health and safety indoors or outdoors

Education and Experience: AA/AS and/or BA/BS or enrolled in program leading to BA/BS in Early Childhood Education (ECE); OR in a field related to early childhood education and coursework in early childhood education; Training and experience working with infants and toddlers, and about child health, safety and nutrition. Experience in child assessments, infant/toddler curriculum, and experience working with infants and toddlers with diverse needs in a center-based program including children with disabilities.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Bilingual, bi-literate preferred; English/Spanish or ASL and/or other language ability based on program needs.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Regulations require a physical examination, current tuberculosis test, immunizations, and verified fingerprint and criminal record clearance before beginning work.
