JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Camp Director, Summer, is a senior leadership role at camp responsible for operational oversight, program planning, staff management, and cross-departmental coordination. This position provides operational continuity and serves as a secondary leadership authority supporting the Camp Director. This position collaborates with the Assistant Camp Director of 3 Seasons to ensure leadership and programming throughout the year.
Assistant Camp Directors manage scheduling, workforce planning, facility readiness, and program execution for their season(s), ensuring consistent standards, safety, and strategic alignment. They are primarily assigned to one camp location but will collaborate with their colleagues to ensure the development and delivery of consistent, high-quality camp experiences for all participants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Multi-Season Program Leadership
- Lead planning, implementation, and evaluation of summer programming
- Recruit campers for summer camp and 3-season programs
- Maintain relevant certifications for leading activities and coaching staff
- Ensure program consistency, safety, and engagement
- Identify opportunities for improvement and innovation
Workforce Management
- Oversee hiring, onboarding, and supervision of seasonal staff
- Manage staffing transitions across programming seasons
- Address escalated performance or conduct issues
Operational & Facility Oversight
- Manage camp scheduling and facility readiness during camp season
- Coordinate logistics for all summer programs and events
- Maintain compliance with safety and accreditation standards
Leadership & Decision-Making
- Serve as operational lead for summer when the Camp Director is unavailable
- Exercises independent operational judgment; Escalates strategic or high-risk decisions
- Support the camp director in business management functions and stewardship
- Support crisis response and complex decision-making
Organizational Collaboration
- Support non-summer programming as assigned
- Support stakeholder, donor, or partner engagement
- Assist with budgeting and operational planning
- Maintain confidential information of staff, donors, volunteers, and the organization
Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- 3+ years of camp leadership and staff management experience
- Advanced operational planning capability
- Strong leadership, communication, customer service, and decision-making skills
- Working knowledge of standard business software, including Microsoft Office.
- Experience with CampMinder and/or Doubleknot is a plus.
Position Specific Requirements
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Willingness to live, sleep, and work in a rustic outdoor environment during summer camp (May – August, full-time, occasional weekends)
- Ability to work non-standard hours, including weekend and evening hours.
- Able to achieve and maintain relevant certifications, with a focus on challenge course level 1, lifeguarding, or kitchen manager. Should be capable of achieving most certifications based on need (target sports, watercraft etc.)
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Requires physical strength and stamina to live, traverse, and conduct activities on steep, uneven, rough terrain.
- Ability to lift and/or transfer objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
Must be able to successfully complete and clear a criminal, MVR, and sex offender background check**
