Communications Support Writer/Editor

This role supports public health communication initiatives by producing clear, accurate, and accessible science-based content for diverse audiences. You will contribute to the development of web content, training materials, policy messaging, and outreach assets that translate complex scientific and operational guidance into plain language. Working in a highly collaborative, mission-driven environment, you will coordinate with communications, scientific, and policy teams to ensure consistency, clarity, and impact across all materials. The position also involves supporting digital engagement, stakeholder communications, and health education efforts. With a strong focus on accuracy and risk communication best practices, your work will help ensure critical information reaches the right audiences effectively. This is a part-time remote role offering meaningful contribution to national public health communication efforts.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will develop, edit, and refine public health communication materials that support infection control guidance, policy messaging, and educational outreach. You will collaborate closely with scientific and communications teams to ensure content is accurate, audience-appropriate, and aligned with established communication standards. Key responsibilities include:

  • Writing and editing public health content including guidelines, training materials, reports, web content, and policy communications
  • Translating scientific and technical information into clear, plain-language messaging for diverse audiences
  • Supporting outreach initiatives, digital campaigns, and stakeholder engagement activities
  • Coordinating with internal teams and external partners to ensure consistent messaging across platforms
  • Assisting in the development of visual communication materials in collaboration with design teams
  • Managing content updates across web, email, and internal communication systems
  • Ensuring all materials comply with risk communication, accessibility (Section 508), and plain-language standards
  • Supporting data gathering, documentation, and communication performance tracking as needed
Requirements

This role requires strong writing and editing expertise, along with experience in health communications or public health environments. Candidates should be highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working across multiple projects in a fast-paced setting.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Communications, Journalism, English, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in health communication, health education, or related public health work
  • Strong ability to write, edit, and adapt scientific or technical content for general audiences
  • Experience working with public health agencies or similar organizations preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and ability to manage data and documentation
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities with the capacity to manage competing priorities
  • Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups
  • Familiarity with digital content management tools, email platforms, or web content systems is a plus
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance if applicable
