Regular Part-Time

WHAT YOU WILL DO

As a key member of the Gallery store team, the incumbent is primarily responsible for receipt and inventory of incoming shipments of merchandise for the Vancouver Art Gallery store. They are also responsible for supporting associates on the sales floor with customer service and operating the point-of-sale system. The Shipping & Receiving Assistant contributes to effective inventory management by organizing and replenishing stock in response to sales, assisting management with inventory reporting, performing cycle counts and assisting with the maintenance of the point-of-sale database to ensure its integrity.

  • Receives shipments of merchandise into the warehouse in appropriate receiving priority
  • Helps customers and provides information about merchandise
  • Communicates and coordinates with team members to ensure a seamless experience for
  • visitors throughout the Gallery
  • Takes payment for sales using a point-of-sale terminal, activates register programs to process
  • staff discounts, refunds, redeem credit notes, issue gift certificates and convert U.S. funds
  • Provides support to the floor staff for break coverage as needed
  • In collaboration with the store associates and the store manager, creates or modifies eye-catching product displays
  • Unpacks and checks goods against packing slips and invoices
  • Marks incoming goods with label codes and prices
  • Carries large shipments from loading bay to basement storeroom for processing; Carries goods
  • from basement storeroom to Galley store and store stockroom
  • Enters new inventory and purchase orders into the point-of-sale system ensuring accuracy and
  • completeness
  • Performs supply counts and alerts the Gallery store manager when storeroom supplies are low
  • Produces inventory reports to replenish stock to ensure inventory accuracy; Takes action to correct inventory discrepancies
  • Takes part in year-end inventory procedures and is responsible for warehouse count integrity
  • In consultation with the store manager, is responsible for all on-line orders and maintenance
  • of the Gallery’s online store; Responsible for any special orders that cannot be processed by
  • Gallery Store staff
  • Sells and processes wholesale orders
  • Responsible for contacting vendors about any damaged merchandise received and processing
  • returns
  • Maintains and organizes products and supplies in the warehouse and stockrooms
  • Communicates with managers and staff regarding any inventory related issues or priorities
  • Contributes to a positive workplace culture by modelling respectful and inclusive

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE

The Shipping & Receiving Assistant will have completed Grade 12 supplemented by courses in office procedures and administration or related experience. In addition, the incumbent will have at least two (2) years of experience in a retail or warehouse setting. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and familiarity with electronic point-of-sale systems is required. Some art related knowledge/education is an asset.

  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service; ability to provide consistently high-quality customer service and create welcoming experiences for diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in inventory management
  • Ability to establish good relationships and deal effectively with visitors, callers and staff and promote a positive public image
  • Some knowledge of Art Gallery exhibition programmes and activities
  • Strong conflict management skills
  • Ability to stand for up to eight hours per shift; ability to lift and carry and move boxes from floor to shelf height
  • Willing to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends

Compensation and Work Environment

Salary: Pay Grade 14, $23.61 - $27.38 per hour, Monday to Thursday, 10am - 4:30pm

Hours: 24 hours per week

This is a unionized position that falls under the jurisdiction of CUPE Local 15 – VMECW. This is an in-office position at the Gallery’s downtown Vancouver location.
